Baylor-Texas: Bears Eye the Upset
Baylor vs. Texas—when you think about Big 12 football, that's not exactly the first rivalry that comes to mind.
But Saturday, both teams look to show what they've got when the 2005 National Champs come to Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.
Baylor is the team with the most to prove here. After dropping their first three conference games—including a dismal blowout in Kansas—the Bears now have to deal with a tough second-half schedule, including Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Texas Tech.
The big question on every Baylor fan's mind is: Who will be starting behind center?
With Blake Szymanski ruled out after last week's concussion, Guy Morriss has been looking at John David Weed, Kent State transfer Michael Machen, and Ryan Roberts, who has performed impressively in the little playing time he's had.
No matter who starts, if the Bears want to win, they will have to step up their receiving game.
Although Szymanski went 36-60 with 410 yards in a loss to Colorado, 12 of the incompletions came from dropped passes, which also cost them dearly against Texas A&M.
Senior tight end Brandon Whitaker told the press that he was "tired of losing." Well, for Baylor to win, the receiving corps must snag those critical passes.
On Texas' side, the Horns have just come off of their longest conference losing streak—if we can call two games a streak—in 51 years after a 56-3 blowout against Iowa State.
Although Baylor looks to be a manageable opponent, Texas may be unable to recover from losses to Oklahoma and Kansas State.
Plus, QB Colt McCoy's isn't at 100 percent physically—and we all know what happened last year after he was injured.
Baylor only has one victory in 11 games against Texas since joining the Big 12, but in this Year of the Underdog, Baylor students just may be tearing down the goal posts on Saturday.
