William Regal's Game-Changing Signing and More AEW Revolution Hot Takes

Erik BeastonMar 7, 2022

William Regal debuted Sunday night at All Elite Wrestling's Revolution pay-per-view, interrupting a brawl between Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson and setting the stage for his involvement in the next chapter of their story.

On the surface, it looks like another signing of a non-wrestler to play a managerial role, not unlike Arn Anderson's use since joining the promotion. In reality, Regal's signing has the potential to change the game for AEW, as the legendary competitor and future Hall of Famer benefits the company both on and off screen.

His debut at the pay-per-view headlines the hot takes from Sunday's extravaganza, which also cover Hangman Page's world title reign, Sting's status as an icon and a tag team division that has outgrown its spot on the undercard.

William Regal Will Prove to Be AEW's Most Important Recent Signing

On the surface, the fact that William Regal cannot contribute to AEW between the ropes would seemingly lessen the impact of his signing with the company. That may be true for any other non-wrestler, but in the case of the future Hall of Famer, his arrival makes him the most important and valuable addition in recent memory.

We know Regal will be an extraordinary presence on AEW TV. He has long had a reputation of being one of the best characters in the industry, a doubly smart performer who knows how to hit his marks and elevate the talent around him.

After interrupting the post-match brawl between Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson on Sunday night, the idea of him sharing the screen with those two stars and potentially heading up a faction of promising young competitors like Lee Moriarty and Daniel Garcia is certainly appealing.

It is what Regal brings to the table off camera that elevates his value, though.

Regal spent years as a talent scout for WWE, traveling the world and bringing back with him stars who could thrive in NXT and at the next level. He knew exactly what Triple H and Co. were looking for to help mold the NXT brand and was as responsible as anyone for helping that roster produce the extraordinary television and live event specials that it did at its peak.

Assuming Regal will have some sort of role in scouting talent for AEW, it was a brilliant signing by Khan, whose show will benefit from the former King of the Ring and intercontinental champion's expertise in front of the camera and in the ever-important development of talent.

Danielson, CM Punk, Adam Cole and Keith Lee were great additions to the roster and helped elevate the star power of AEW, but Regal is the sort of signing who can both enhance stars and be on the lookout for the next ones, making him as important as those talents, if not more so.

AEW's Tag Team Division Should Headline PPV Events

2 of 4

How many times does the AEW tag team division have to steal the show out from underneath everyone else before it has the opportunity to main-event a pay-per-view?

Led by The Young Bucks, the division is routinely responsible for some of the best matches of the entire year but has been shut out of the top spot on PPV cards.

AEW, like most companies, typically reserves that spot for its world championship. Unlike most companies, though, AEW's tag division is just as hot and produces as strong of matches as its singles division.

Look no further than the second bout of Sunday's show, when the Bucks, ReDRagon's Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish and champions Jurassic Express tore the house down with a damn-near 5-star classic that only served to further spotlight how superb that division is.

Throw in the Lucha Bros, Sting and Darby Allin, FTR, Santana and Ortiz, The House of Black, Private Party and the expected reunion of the Hardy Boyz, and you have a division that could easily sit atop a PPV lineup and be both believable in that spot and embraced by fans.

Especially given the quality of the action it is putting out on a consistent basis.

It would take some strong storytelling to get the division there, but with the strength of the roster and a Bucks team that are every bit the stars the likes of Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, Hangman Page and Jon Moxley are, that should not be an issue.

It is beyond time for it to happen, and further resistance will only result in the division continuing to outshine everything else on the card, like it did during Sunday's loaded lineup.

Hangman Page Continues the Greatest AEW Championship Reign in Company History

3 of 4

"Hangman" Adam Page defeated Adam Cole in the main event of Revolution to retain his AEW world title and continue what is the best reign in company history.

Yes, even better than Kenny Omega's near-yearlong run with the top prize.

Though Page has only held the title since November, and some questioned his booking early on, the Anxious Millennial Cowboy has silenced his critics with a series of contrasting title defenses that have established his position as the guy in AEW.

Sunday's win over Cole was a fantastic main event full of traditional wrestling, a big table bump and a little sports entertainment involving Dark Order and ReDRagon as a nice bit of continuity following Wednesday's episode of Dynamite.

Before that show-capping bout, Page endured tremendous physical punishment at the hands of Lance Archer in a Texas Death match. That hardcore brawl tested his physicality while two championship defenses against Bryan Danielson tested his endurance and will to be the champion.

Each title match has tested Page in a different manner, and he has passed every one. This isn't a guy who is out there in flashy promo segments, signing contracts or relying on an abundance on interference from his Elite buddies or Don Callis.

Page is a champion who goes to the ring, absorbs, advances and kicks ass en route to retaining his title. And to top it all off, the matches are fantastic displays from a performer coming into his own in his role as the top dog in the company.

Some will argue that Omega's, Chris Jericho's and Jon Moxley's title reigns were better because of length or their matches here or there, but none has encompassed a character arc quite like Page's. For that reason, as well as the undeniable quality of the in-ring action, he is the best world champion the company has produced, and he is only getting started.

Sting Proving 'Icon' Is More Than Just a Nickname

4 of 4

For Sting, the term "icon" is more than just a fancy nickname tacked on to sell T-shirts. The 62-year-old Hall of Famer embodies it every time he enters the squared circle.

At his age, Sting could easily get by on name and reputation alone. He is one of the most recognizable stars in wrestling history and one of the biggest of the much-discussed Monday Night War. His matches with Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger, The Giant, Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page defined eras of WCW, and his work in TNA Wrestling helped that promotion evolve from a little company that could into a nationally televised entity.

He easily could have arrived in AEW, popped the crowd with his entrance, threw some punches here or there and sent the fans home happy. Instead, he continues to produce bangers, putting forth the effort of a 20-something star still seeking his breakout moment.

Sunday at Revolution, in a six-man tag team match pitting him, Darby Allin and TNT champion Sammy Guevara against Andrade El Idolo, Isiah Kassidy and Matt Hardy, the ageless wonder leaped from a guardrail in the stands of the arena, driving El Idolo through a table.

It was another example of his commitment to an industry that has consumed his life for 37 years and proof that he is not content to go out, shake some hands and live off the legend pop. He is an all-timer, a guy whose passion for the sport is as strong today as it was when he won his first world title in 1990.

That young stars like Allin, Kassidy, Guevara and even El Idolo are benefitting from working alongside him only elevates his legendary status. He could big-time everyone and only agree to work main events. He does not because he is eager to prove himself with the bright young stars in the company regardless of where that is on the card.

He is a selfless legend, a tremendous ambassador for the sport and an icon is the purest sense of the word. AEW, its fans and pro wrestling at large are lucky to still have him around, putting forth the effort and showcasing his love of the industry like he does.
