No British Grand Prix In 2010? Surely Not!
Back in July 2009 who would have thought that Silverstone would be given the chance to hold the 2009 Formula One, British Grand Prix?
Until October of this year the British Grand Prix was to be held at Donington in 2010, where the sport has not been since 1993 in which Donington held the European Grand Prix. However, after they were unable to provide evidence as to their £135 million funding the idea of Donington staging the 2010 British grand Prix was scrapped and negotiations were opened up with Silverstone. However, after problematic negotiations Ecclestone has said that Donington still has a very slim chance of hosting the Grand Prix, should someone provide the right ideas and adequate funding.
But for now the focus still remains on Silverstone and the final meeting on the ninth December will decide whether Silverstone is added to the calendar for the 2010 season or not.
"At the moment there is no British Grand Prix," Ecclestone told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.
Silverstone has yet to agree the financial terms of the agreement and has been told that the venue and its facilities must be modernised. Ecclestone said: "I want a British Grand Prix, of course, but we are not going to do special rates for Britain." This is a U-turn in Ecclestone's statement in June of this year, claiming that a British Grand Prix was secured. Damon Hill, now president of the British Racing Drivers' Club which is negotiating a deal to take the race back to Silverstone believes that Ecclestone could be tempted to give the Grand Prix slot to Korea, a deal that could grant him more money as the circuit and event would be publicly funded, much like this years final Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi.
Many British fans would be extremely disheartened should Britain be removed form the racing calendar for 2010. Especially considering both World Champions in the past two years, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were British and now they complete the all British team, McLaren's line-up for 2010!
"If they [Silverstone] can't make it work then don't do it. If that happens, there won't be a British Grand Prix. Simple as that."
