THERE'S SOMETHING REALLY WRONG WITH THE BCS
Every year we listen to the controversy about the BCS and who should be ranked where. This year is no different with national powers Florida, Alabama, and Texas topping all polls with cinderellas like Texas Christian and Cincinnati trying to break into the mix.
Yesterday, two of the supposed top teams in the country played teams that have no business being on their schedule. Florida playing FIU and Alabama playing Tennessee-Chattanooga.
FLORIDA: This school has to have the weakest non-conference schedule in the nation. In fact, it could be said that not a single one of the non-conference foes Florida faced this year would even be competitive in the non BCS conference of the Mountain West.
To date, Florida has played 3 non-conference games against those power house universities of Charleston Southern, Troy, and most recently Florida International. With non-conference foe and state rival Florida State up next on the schedule, the Florida Gators non-conference foes currently stand at 23-21 for the 2009 season.
The SEC Conference only can sport 4 teams with records .700 or better with most playing .600 ball or worst. THIS IS THE TOP TEAM IN THE NATION? Maybe they can get Davidson College in North Carolina on their schedule next year, 60-0 wins seen to impress the BCS even if they are against lower tiered teams.
ALABAMA: Much like Florida, this team has risen to the top of the polls playing what only one could consider a very weak conference schedule combined with most certainly the second weakest non-conference schedule next to Florida.
Non-conference foes like Florida International, North Texas, Tennessee-Chatanooga, and Virginia Tech can only be classified as seeking out the best competition available - NOT!
The Crimson Tide's non-conference foes are sporting a 19-25 record this year. They certainly play in the same conference as Florida, the one with only 4 teams with over .700 records. Of those 4 teams with winning records of over .700, Florida and Alabama being two of them, Florida failed to play Mississippi while Alabama played both Mississippi and LSU.
TEXAS: How about those Longhorns? Looking at a potential BCS Championship game, the Longhorns pulled a page out of Florida's book to get there.
Playing non-conference powerhouses like Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, and UCF, Texas' non-conference foes this year are sporting a crisp 21-23 record.
Much like Florida and Alabama, only 3 teams can boast a record of over .700 in the Big 12 Conference. Texas is one of those naturally with Nebraska and Oklahoma State being the others.
Teams have no control over how their competition will do within the conference. However, if your conference is weak, then it should be taken into consideration. Conference schedule aside, a teams non-conference schedule should weigh heavily into the BCS Standings. Of the top 25 teams currently rated in the BCS Standings, 6 teams are currently undefeated.
How does your favorite rank as far as non-conference schedule played and those teams records? Let's take a critical look:
#4 TCU 24-20 .545 (played 1 ranked non-conference team, #23)
#1 Florida 23-21 .523 (played zero ranked non-conference teams)
#3 Texas 21-23 .432 (played zero ranked non-conference teams)
#6 Boise St 26-30 .464 (played 1 ranked non-conference team, #11)
#2 Alabama 19-25 .432 (played 1 ranked non-conference team, #15)
#4 Cincinnati 21-34 .382 (played 1 ranked non-conference team, #19)
What about total schedule, how many ranked teams did your favorite play?
#2 Alabama 5 (includes Florida)
#4 TCU 3
#5 Cincinnati 3 (includes Pittsburgh)
#3 Texas 2
#1 Florida 2 (includes Alabama)
#6 Boise St 1
It would be safe to say, THERE'S SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THE BCS!
Are the best teams really ranked at the top of the polls or the ones with the easiest schedules and name recognition? This article would prove the latter..............
