Is It Now Or Never For Strikeforce?
If Strikeforce is looking to make an impact, they have a small window to work with.
Considering many of the UFC’s headlining bouts are being cancelled, postponed indefinitely or pulled out of, what better opportunity than now will Strikeforce get to put together a quality card or two against these lesser cards.
The fact that many fans looking forward to fights such as Quinton Jackson versus Rashad Evans, Brock Lesnar versus Shane Carwin and Antonio Nogueira versus Cain Velasquez, will feel somewhat disappointed could lead to more spill-over fans from the UFC than normal.
The UFC hasn’t exactly pleased the masses as of late with two – often discussed – controversial decisions in as many months. They could be looking for a fresh start.
The only problem is that so far, Strikeforce doesn’t have a scheduled January card to compete with the fairly week UFC 108 card.
It’s highly unlikely that Strikeforce would trump the UFC in the long run, but just one or two months of strong Pay-Per-View and event sales would cause what I believe would turn out to be some great back-and-forth programming from both organizations.
Dana White and the Fertitas would start seeing a minute blip on their radar and improved cards – they have been pretty good recently, though – would come of it. White would surprise everyone by making brash, off the hip comments (wait, he wouldn’t surprise anyone), cursing and then would reveal a mother of a card.
In a perfect world, Strikeforce would put that partnership with Dream to good use and take advantage of the Japanese viewers by bringing over Hayato Sakurai for a rematch against the new king of the high kick, Marius Zaromskis. A Nick Diaz fight with Zaromskis for the Strikeforce welterweight championship would also be a decent fight.
Considering the bad blood, a Ronaldo Souza and Jason Miller rematch would be highly competitive and would work, both are charismatic, although who knows how over the “alligator” (Jacare is actually a species of caiman) arm gesture or crawl would be. Just put the name Gina Carano on the card and Strikeforce will be able to draw.
And imagine a January Strikeforce line-up of Fedor Emelianenko versus Alistair Overeem in the headliner after Gegard Mousasi versus Dan Henderson, if Henderson were to sign. Brett Rogers facing off with Fabricio Werdum wouldn’t make for a terrible undercard fight. And just for fun, Shamrock versus Shamrock at long last.
Yes, I may be living in a dream world, but a big card up against the UFC’s weak 108 card could very well be what Strikeforce needs to take bigger piece of the delicious smelling MMA fan pie that’s cooling on the UFC’s window sill.
