David KenyonSep 2, 2020

Though the grandstand will be absent colorful outfits, eccentric hats and mint juleps, Churchill Downs will once again provide a spectacle in the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Race favorite Tiz the Law leads the 18-horse field into the second leg of the Triple Crown series. Ridden by jockey Manny Franco, the colt dominated at the Belmont Stakes on June 20 and will continue his Triple Crown pursuit Saturday evening.

From the Derby Day schedule to recent news and race odds, the important information to know is all here.

2020 Kentucky Derby Schedule

If you're only interested in watching the race, the Kentucky Derby is scheduled to start at 7:01 p.m. ET.

But the lead-up to the event starts much earlier.

At approximately 6:17 p.m., the horses will leave the barn and head for the paddock. Then at 6:44 p.m., the jockeys will mount the horses following the "Riders Up" call. Immediately afterward will be the traditional singing of "My Old Kentucky Home."

The horses will promptly hit the track and begin lining up in their assigned stalls. The gates will fly open at 7:01 p.m., and the Kentucky Derby champion will be crowned about two minutes later.

While the schedule is contingent on the weather, the current forecast is 81 degrees and sunny, per Accuweather.

The post position draw happened Tuesday morning, and Tiz the Law is slated to start on the outside of the field. He will break from post 17.

According to Gene Kershner of the Buffalo News, trainer Barclay Tagg isn't disappointed with the draw.

"I like being on the outside, I didn't particularly want to be out that far but he seems to handle everything that's thrown at him, so we'll just have to leave it up to him," he said of Tiz the Law. "It gives you a chance, if you have any speed at all, it gives you a chance to get a better position."

Three other notable changes happened Tuesday.

Mr. Big News and South Bend both joined the field, but the Derby lost an expected contender. Art Collector has a minor issue and will no longer run, according to trainer Tommy Drury Jr.

"First and foremost, as the trainer, it's my responsibility to be the voice for the horse," he said, per Jennie Rees of the Kentucky HBPA. "That's just not fair to him. He's been too good to us, and we're going to make sure he's taken care of first."

In his absence, Honor A. P. and Authentic are now considered the primary competition for Tiz the Law.
