J.S Giguere Prefers to Hang Them Up

GoucheNov 12, 2009

Anaheim Ducks veteran netminder J.S. Giguere has made it perfectly clear that he would rather hang up the skates and call it a career then be a backup. This 32 year-old who played a huge role in the Ducks winning the Stanley Cup in 2007 lost his job after going on the disabled list in late October with a strained groin. Now the Montreal native who has only played in four games this season has pronounced himself completely healthy. With Giguere coming back the Ducks brain trust have some big decisions to make. Jonas Hiller has started six straight games and has posted .919 save percentage and a 2.76 GAA. ”I’d rather retire than be a backup goalie,” Giguere who has 210 career wins said. “Something needs to happen. You get a guy like (Hiller) that’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year and myself, making the money I’m making, either I’m leaving or he’s leaving.” For the record Hiller is set to make 1.3 million this year and Giguere has two years remaining at 13 million dollars. If the Ducks are to have a successful season then obviously management has some work to do at resolving this situation. Giguere who is also a past Conn Smythe Trophy winner would have to waive his no trade clause if management decides to trade him.
