If I Didn't Know Better: The Brewers Are Rebuilding.
Call it what you want rebuilding, retooling, or getting younger. Any way you look at it the Milwaukee brewers are making changes.
In Friday's interview with WSSP the Brewers GM Doug Melvin said that prospect Jonathan Lucroy would be given the chance to earn the starting catchers job in spring training. He, along with newly acquired centerfielder Carlos Gomez and top prospect Alcides Escobar are the nucleus of the Brewers efforts to both get younger and shed payroll.
Assuming that veterans Mike Cameron and Jason Kendall are off the roster next year the Brewers will move forward with one of the youngest starting lineups in the Major League Baseball. Leaving Last years Rookie of the Year candidate Casey McGehee and right fielder Corey Hart as the oldest starters on the team.
While these young players that the Brewers are moving forward with show loads of promise and have the ability to out-perform their predecessors, the Milwaukee fans are once again going to have to accept the inconsistency that comes with young players.
With the 2011 class of free agents projected to be much deeper than the 2009 class, and the hope of bounce-back years from prospects like Mat Gamel, Angle Solome, and veteran Corey Hart. The Brewers could be in a better situation to "wait and see" until next year.
For those Brewer fans who have been watching these young players develop through their system it will be a fun year to watch the Brewers. For those that are expecting another playoff run it could be a year away.
