Wayne Gretzky Steals Cameras
Wayne Gretzky who has been lying low since the season began insisted that there was never any truth to the many rumours that the Great One would be skipping the Hockey Hall Of Fame Inductions ceremony. Rumours were making the rounds this past weekend that the 48 year-old who is the all time NHL leading scorer with 2,857 career points wouldn’t show up to the event due to the complex issues and aftermath dealing with the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes. On Monday night Gretzky who recently quit his position as coach and minority owner of the Coyotes showed his class and unselfishness when he said that the Induction Ceremony wasn’t about the mess that resulted in the sale of the Coyotes but to celebrate the rich careers of four star players in Steve Yzerman, Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch, Brett Hull along with New Jersey Devils long time architect Lou Lamoriello. ”It is what it is right now,” Gretzky said about the sale of Phoenix. “Right now, it’s just my time to sit back and enjoy my kids. You know what? The game is bigger than any individual or any person. Right now, it is just not a part of my life. It’s as simple as that.” Gretzky who took a red eye from Las Vegas to be at the inductions has special ties with the four players who were inducted. While a member of the Las Angeles Kings Gretzky often played on a line with Robitaille who is the all time leading scorer among left wingers with 668 goals. After Los Angeles Gretzky had a brief cup of coffee with the St. Louis Blues where he got to play with Hull and later on the Great One ended up on Broadway where he played with Brian Leetch and the New York Rangers. Meanwhile Gretzky teamed up with Yzerman in several Team Canada tournaments. ”This is a great honour for them,” Gretzky said. “They’re all champions and they are all really great guys.”
