Oregon Ducks Football Campus Voice: Blount Returns To Humbled Ducks
LeGarrette Blount is back. Yes, that LeGarrette Blount.
His return has been expected for quite some time, but no body knew for sure if Chip Kelly was going to allow it. Kelly had been waiting for Blount to show that he deserved to come back from suspension, and apparently Blount has done just that.
Ever since his suspension, Blount has been a popular topic around campus and his reinstatement looked forward to by students.
The overwhelming support in favor of Blount has been shown all season through students wearing his jersey and “free Blount” T-shirts to games, chanting, “we want Blount!” at games, and many students dressing up as Blount for Halloween, with boxing gloves and all.
However, Kelly has stated that Blount it currently fourth or fifth on the depth chart for running backs. Meaning he is on the back end of the chart and will not see much action in the next couple of weeks.
This should not come as a surprise to any one because of the emergence of the other backs and the fact that Blount has not stepped onto the field in over two months.
While this story is dominating the Oregon campus today, something did happened over the weekend. Oregon lost to the up and coming Stanford Cardinals.
In my years here at the University of Oregon, and my many more years as a fan, never have I seen Duck fans and students take a loss so well.
The eighth ranked Ducks were beat up, bruised, bullied, black and blued, bounced around, battered, blasted, bulldozed, and any other "b" word that you would like to add, by a Stanford team that looked like it was picking on its younger brother.
With Toby Gerhart leading the charge, the Ducks defense looked pathetic, weak, and unable to grasp the idea of playing with heart.
In light of the failed trip to Stanford, Oregon students coped with the loss in a surprising manner: acceptance.
Every other loss that has taken place over the past four seasons has sparked debate and questioning of whether the coach’s had made the right calls or discussion of certain plays that had turned the momentum of the game in favor of the opposition.
However, with this game, the Duck faithful simply accepted that we got hammered.
Factors for such behavior are somewhat obvious and understandable.
First of all, the loss did not put Oregon out of contention for the Pac-10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl.
Secondly, Oregon was outplayed. This doesn’t happen much, so when it does, it is much easier to give credit where it is due, and that is with Stanford.
Thirdly, Oregon’s offense looked as good as ever. They were nearly able to bail the defense out of their pitiful display.
The Ducks will be back next weekend with Arizona State coming to Eugene.
ASU will most likely start a freshman at quarterback.
Good luck with that kid, we all know how freshman quarterbacks fair in their first encounter with Autzen.
In the meantime, GO DUCKS!!!!
