Nevada Routs San Jose State As WAC Elite Head For Showdown
San Jose State was no match for the nation's number one rushing offense as Nevada beat the Spartans 62-7 in San Jose before a nationwide audience on ESPN. It was the Wolf Pack's best performance of the year. The offense was unstoppable. Nevada tied an NCAA record with 4 rushers going over the century mark. But it was their defense that showed the greatest improvement over the course of the season. Last night the defense was really impressive. Isiah Frey made a spectacular play causing a fumble that was recovered by Mo Harvey. There was another key interception in the San Jose end zone. The defense is looking very solid, and that should be worrying Fresno State and especially Boise State.
Nevada has long been known as an offensive powerhouse. They're the only team capable of scoring over 100 points against Boise State in just their last two games, yet still managed to lose them both! Nevada doesn't generally lose on offense. They have never really focused on defense, that is until this season. With a new defensive coordinator, the team looks much more balanced with a steadily improving defense that is becoming as stout as its potent offense. Put those two factors together and peak at the right time and Nevada may have a surprise in store for the reining WAC champs.
Two key games remain. Fresno State on November 14 in Reno and the battle for the WAC title on November 27 in Boise. Fresno is always tough, because they always play a tough schedule. They have nationwide respect. Boise seems to be a very good team. Its just very difficult to know based upon their schedule and that's not just my opinion. Most college football pundits echo that sentiment. Given how weak BSU looked against LA Tech, a team Nevada ran all over, I am getting increasingly confident that we could see an upset on November 27. The test will be Fresno State who gave BSU all they could handle. If Nevada is impressive against the Bulldogs, then I think they can beat BSU and win the WAC championship, even finishing ranked for the first time ever.
Watching Kaepernick on Sunday night, it is very clear that he is a very gifted all around athlete. At 6'4" and 220 pounds with blazing speed and a rocket strong arm, we may well be watching him on Sunday nights in the future. He has NFL size and an NFL strong arm. His passing has been razor sharp. He is true dual threat and can wreak havoc when he rushes. He makes spectacular things happen on broken plays. He is being recognized as a very special prospect across the country, and he is only a junior.
