Buffalo Bills: Stadium Experience Changing?
I wanted to take a brief minute to address something thats been on my mind for a few days:
This past Sunday I was fortunate enough (or unfortunate enough) to be able to make it out to Ralph Wilson Stadium for the Bills - Texans game. While I knew that it could be a pretty ugly game for a Bills fan, I knew that I'd still have a good time.
As most know, a large part of the football game experience has very little to do with football at all. Tailgating and fan camaraderie play big part in the game day experience. Of course these things are much more enjoyable with a win, but I knew that even with a loss I'd still enjoy myself to some degree.

While I missed the tailgating experience this time around, I knew that my friends and I were still in store for a great time inside the stadium. Between screaming for our Bills and mouthing off to Texans fans we'd find plenty of enjoyment. What happened inside, unfortunately, made for the worst game day experience I've ever had.
Before you write this off as a "oh my, people are rowdy and unruly at Bills games" you should know that I am the rowdy, unruly Buffalonian. I was raised going to Bills games in the 1990's and saw all sorts of behavior that I wouldn't have otherwise seen until college. I love the way Buffalo behaves at Bills games. It's like a bad boys (and girls) club.
So no, I'm not complaining that someone spilled their beer on me or swore in front of some kids. Thats football. There are fights, drunks, and cussing. What appalled me, rather, was the amount of ridiculousness that went on with the security guards (or as I call them, yellow jackets, because of their yellow jackets) harassing everyone for swearing, smoking, throwing things etc..
Yes, I know there is a code of conduct in NFL stadiums. There must be a mutual respect though. There are those of us who are trying to watch the game and are very used to people swearing, smoking, and throwing various objects. What's distracting is when every single offender is brought out of their seat, past your own point of view to get a tongue lashing from a yellow jacket. Meanwhile, yellow jackets buzz around, getting in your way, ruining a big play here or there.
Never have I had a problem with my game day experience until this season. Its borderline absurd that the people that are trying to preserve it are actually ruining game day experience.
Yes, I've heard the complaints of people with children who want to take their kids to the game and have horror stories afterwards. First of all, get over it, football is gnarly, rude, and tough. Secondly, go to a baseball game if you want a family experience. I spent many childhood days at, then, Rich Stadium - back before it was illegal to say "[sic] the Texans" out loud. I mean, hell, I remember chanting "bullshit" when I was probably 12 years old. It was one of the coolest things to me then.
So I say this to you - if you want a pleasant, quiet Sunday afternoon, stay away from the Ralph. If not, I'll see you there.
