College Football Upset Alert for Week 10
1.) Kansas State over Kansas
In his return to the program this season, Bill Snyder has guided the Wildcats to the top of the Big 12 North standings. His squad is a perfect 4-0 at home in 2009. Kansas State’s 62-14 win over Texas A & M in Manhattan last month provides an example of the damage the Wildcats can do at home. On offense, Kansas State is a solid 32nd in the country in rushing offense. The defense is 43rd in the nation in total defense.
Snyder’s impact has been evident by the sound fundamentals of his squad. Kansas State is 14th in the country in turnover margin. While the visiting Jayhawks are a 2.5-point favorite in Saturday’s contest, the club has dropped three straight entering this matchup. Kansas has won the last three meetings in the state rivalry. However, none of those wins were against Snyder. In the final 15 years of his first tenure at Kansas State from 1991-2005, Snyder went 13-2 against Kansas with a perfect 8-0 mark at home.
2.) Stanford over Oregon
The Cardinal are in line for their best season since 2001. It was during that 2001 campaign when Stanford recorded their last victory over the Ducks. The Cardinal will look to protect their perfect 4-0 home mark on Saturday as a 4-point underdog against the 7th-ranked Oregon squad. While Oregon has a highly touted offense, Stanford is ranked second in the PAC-10 in total offense behind Arizona. The Cardinal defense is a solid 44th in the country in scoring defense.
With the top kickoff return average in the nation, Stanford’s special teams could be a major factor on Saturday. It will be a difficult challenge for Oregon to be inspired to play on the road after their resounding win over USC at home last week. The Ducks only defeat of the 2009 campaign came in a hostile environment at Boise State. Stanford’s fans will be a factor as their school can become bowl eligible with a victory.
3.) Florida State over Clemson
In a critical matchup in the ACC Atlantic division race, Florida State travels to Clemson as an 8-point road underdog this week. After a pair of thrilling three-point wins, the Seminoles are building some momentum. Florida State leads the ACC in total offense. Quarterback Christian Ponder has emerged to throw 13 touchdown passes this season with only three interceptions.
While Clemson is a talented squad, the Tigers have been known for their inability to win in the clutch in recent years. This season, Clemson is 1-3 in games decided by four points or less. With a mediocre offense (83rd in the nation in total offense), the Tigers lack the firepower to take advantage of a weak Florida State defense. The Seminoles have controlled the all-time series between the two schools with a record of 16-6. Last year, Florida State out gained Clemson 266-79 on the ground in a 41-27 victory at home.
