Saturday Recap

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde left Messi and midfielder Sergio Busquets on the bench:

Yet Barca needed to call on their captain after a goalless first half. He arrived at half-time for Philippe Coutinho and struck the decisive blow after 62 minutes.

Messi picked up possession from an Arturo Vidal header, beat two defenders and then slotted the ball past Aitor Fernandez with a precise finish:

However, it was a nervy performance by the hosts, and Levante came close to grabbing an equaliser late.

Jose Luis Morales missed a fine chance with a wayward shot after a quick break, while Enis Bardhi's effort hit the post and fell into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barcelona held on for the three points and were presented with the trophy after the game:

The victory maintains the club's domestic dominance and keeps them on track to win a treble. They host Liverpool in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and face Valencia in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Atletico Madrid strengthened their grip on second place with a hard-fought victory over struggling Real Valladolid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Simeone's side were far from their best, but they did force goalkeeper Jordi Masip into a diving save from an Antoine Griezmann free-kick in the first half.

They finally made the breakthrough after 66 minutes through Joaquin's own goal. Saul Niguez sent in a cross from the left, and the defender directed a diving head past Masip.

Atletico survived a late scare when Valladolid thought they had won a penalty after Santiago Arias appeared to handle the ball. However, after a prolonged check by the video assistant referee, Mario Melero Lopez opted against awarding a spot-kick and instead gave a corner to the visitors:

Los Colchoneros also needed goalkeeper Jan Oblak to save attempts from Miguel de la Fuente and Oscar Plano, while Fernando Calero hit the post deep into stoppage time as Valladolid simply could not conjure up an equaliser.

The result leaves Sergio's side still deep in trouble at the bottom of the table. They remain just a point off the relegation zone but will drop into the bottom three if Girona beat Sevilla on Sunday.
