Titans Take WR A.J. Brown in 2019 NFL Draft; Twitter Hypes 'Home Run' Pick

The Tennessee Titans added an Ole Miss record-setter to their wide receiver depth chart Friday when they selected A.J. Brown with the No. 51 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft in Nashville, Tennessee.

The selection of an SEC player at a skill position was sure to elicit a social media reaction, and Twitter users did not disappoint:

Brown tallied 75 catches for 1,252 yards and 11 scores in 2017 and built on his performance with 85 catches for 1,320 yards and six scores in 2018.

Gavino Borquez of USA Today's Draft Wire noted he set the school record for catches in a season, receiving yards in a season, touchdown catches in a season, career receiving yards (2,984) and career 100-yard receiving games (12).

One of the first things that jumps out about Brown's game is his versatility and his potential to contribute in multiple roles.

He frequently lined up in the slot during his time at Ole Miss, serving as someone who could consistently move the chains and beat defenders on underneath routes. However, he also has the size to line up on the outside at 6'0" and 226 pounds and beat cornerbacks on fade routes and jump balls in the red zone.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller projected Brown as the No. 17 overall pick in a mock draft following the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and listed him as the top wide receiver in his latest big board.

He had high praise for the Ole Miss product, writing, "I see too much Michael Thomas and Alshon Jeffery when watching AJ Brown...might have to bump this dude to WR1."

Thomas is one of the best receivers in the league, and Jeffery is a dangerous playmaker in the open field who can beat defenders over the top or underneath.

The thought that Brown could live up to those two names makes him one of the most intriguing selections in the draft and a potential Pro Bowler for years to come.

He will be under plenty of pressure to live up to those expectations, but he delivered against SEC defenses at the collegiate level. Tennessee surely hopes that continues after using a second-round pick on him.

The Titans were an ugly 29th in the league in passing yards in 2018 and need more downfield threats to take the pressure off quarterback Marcus Mariota and the rushing attack. Ideally, Brown can serve as a No. 1 option in the coming years as he and Mariota develop together in the AFC South.
