Bitten by the Twitter Bug: Larry Johnson

Erik ManassyOct 27, 2009

Another athlete gets in trouble for what is said on Twitter. Chiefs running back Larry Johnson used racial slurs on twitter in response to a tweet he received online.

You may recall that our own Jets David Clowney was benched for one game because he was made a comment about playing time on his twitter account. These two offenses are not in even in the same league, but my point is that David owned up to what he said. That my friends is called ACCOUNTABILITY. David sat out his game, focused himself on playing football and the results have been showing he’s been working hard. David still tweets.

Larry on the other hand, I believe, was forced to apologize.

"

“I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate,” he said. “I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said.”

Johnson posted the slur on his Twitter account Sunday in a response to another tweet. On Monday, he said it again in refusing to talk with reporters, according to a recording made by the Kansas City Star.

"

He was exposed and caught on Twitter and then unbelievably said the SAME SLUR to a reporter the next day!

What any person in their life must understand is that you can’t hide from the real self, you! You can try to be someone else, but you will eventually be found out. You can’t hide anymore now that we are in the transparent world with the internet and social media.

We found out who Larry Johnson really is and love him or hate him, he messed up and now he must pay the repercussions. The KC team has already suspended him from all team activities and an NFL investigation continues.

I love when people say that “Twitter” is the problem or Facebook etc. Those tools are just that, the vehicle that the player used to express himself. It gets more attention because (1) Twitter is fairly new to the social landscape and it is EVERYWHERE and (2) Anyone at anytime has access to it as soon as a tweet is made.

This could have been an email, a phone call or an incident caught on tape and the person, Larry Johnson, still said those slurs. Twitter is not the evil, the person using the tool is the evil.
