Bolton and Villa posted their condolences on their Twitter accounts:
Samuel spent nine years at Villa Park, making 169 appearances for the Midlands club. After leaving in 2001, he went on to enjoy a four-year stint at Bolton—he played in the Premier League on 240 occasions for the two clubs—before spending the latter years of his career playing in Iran.
Most recently, he was player-manager of non-league side Egerton, based in Cheshire.
Before opting to play for Trinidad & Tobago, the left-back was called up for the England squad in 2004 by then-manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, but he didn't feature in the fixture against Sweden and went on to represent the country of his birth.
