Premier League Table: 2018 Final Standings and Reaction After Week 38 Results

James DudkoMay 13, 2018

Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to a top-four finish on the final day of this Premier League season. The Reds thrashed Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League at the expense of Chelsea, who lost 3-0 away to Newcastle United.

There was also a fitting send-off for Arsene Wenger, who marked his last game as Arsenal manager with a 1-0 win away to Huddersfield Town. Wenger's joy was shared by champions Manchester City, who finished on 100 points after getting a late winner at Southampton.

Saints stayed up despite defeat, because Swansea City were condemned to relegation after losing 2-1 to Stoke City at the Liberty Stadium.

Liverpool made sure of a top-four finish from the moment Salah put them in front after 26 minutes. The finish marked a landmark for the prolific Egypt international, per the league's official Twitter account:

Dejan Lovren, Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson added the goals as this season's Champions League finalists made certain of being in the tournament next season, no matter what happens against Real Madrid in Kiev in 13 days.

The win also meant Liverpool ended the season unbeaten at home, a fact manager Jurgen Klopp was keen to celebrate during the traditional lap of honour, per the club:

Liverpool would have finished fourth regardless, thanks to Chelsea being swept aside by Newcastle United. The Magpies ran riot with goals from Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez.

Afterwards, under-fire Chelsea boss Antonio Conte bemoaned his side's approach, per BBC Sport:

Conte's future is in doubt, even before the Blues play Manchester United in the FA Cup final next weekend. However, the Italian was quick to remind people about his track record of success, rendering Chelsea's fifth-place finish as something of a blip, per ESPN FC's Liam Twomey:

Chelsea will miss out on the riches on offer in the Champions League, as will Arsenal. At least the Gunners managed to give Wenger a fond farewell by recording a first away win of this calendar year.

Wenger, who is stepping down after 22 years, had Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to thank for the 1-0 win over Huddersfield. He may be moving on, but Wenger remains firm in his belief the team he leaves behind can compete for next season's title, per James Olley of the London Evening Standard:

In a moment of typically wry humour, Wenger, who has been the subject of fierce criticism for much of the last two seasons, admitted he has welcomed the well-wishes received since deciding to leave the club, per London Evening Standard writer James Benge:

Arsenal are ready to move on, but City will be hoping Pep Guardiola's title win is just the start of sustained success. The Citizens amassed a record 100 points when Gabriel Jesus scored a stoppage-time winner at Southampton.

The Premier League took stock of the champions' many awesome achievements during a historic campaign:

Like the rest of the league, Tottenham haven't come close to matching City, but the Lilywhites can still be proud of finishing third. Spurs closed out their season in spectacular fashion at Wembley Stadium by beating Leicester 5-4.

Harry Kane scored twice as he did his best to keep pace with Salah in the race for the Golden Boot. OptaJoe noted how long it has been since the division saw two players so prolific:

Erik Lamela and Jamie Vardy also scored twice in a wild game featuring an own goal from Foxes defender Christian Fuchs, a finish from Riyad Mahrez and a special strike from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Spurs won but couldn't finish runners-up since United had already sealed top spot. The Red Devils warmed up for the Cup final by beating Watford 1-0 at Old Trafford.

It was a final game for midfielder Michael Carrick, who set up the winner for Juan Mata and will join the coaching staff in the summer.

The 36-year-old paid homage to the club, per James Tuck and Stephen Bibby of United's official website: "It's an amazing place to play football. It's the greatest club in the world, and I thank you for your support over the last 12 years."

Team-mate Marcus Rashford also offered Carrick this tribute:

It was a final game for another midfielder, Swansea's Leon Britton. Unfortunately, he ended his career with the Swans relegated to the Championship after a 2-1 home defeat to already doomed Stoke.

Peter Crouch struck the winner for the Potters with what proved to be a milestone goal this season, according to BBC Match of the Day:

West Brom were already down but ended on a limp note with a 2-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace. The Eagles finished strong after a disastrous start to the season, as did West Ham United and Bournemouth, who enjoyed wins over Everton and Burnley, respectively.
