EPL Predictions: Picks, Top Players for Week 38 Premier League Fixtures

Christopher SimpsonMay 10, 2018

A point for Liverpool at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday will all but assure them of a top-four place at the end of the final day in the 2017-18 Premier League season.

The Reds have a far superior goal difference to Chelsea, who are two points behind. The Blues need to beat Newcastle United at St James' Park and would have to make up a 15-goal swing if Liverpool pick up at least a draw, but should Brighton stun them at Anfield, then Chelsea will leapfrog their rivals with a win.

Manchester City can become the first Premier League side to reach 100 points if they beat Southampton, who can guarantee survival with a point. Swansea City lurk three points behind and are at home to relegated Stoke City, but they need to win and make up a 10-goal swing to escape the drop.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool

With the UEFA Champions League final looming, Liverpool would have hoped to come into this match with qualification to next year's competition already secured.

However, back-to-back draws with West Brom and Stoke followed by defeat to Chelsea have given the Blues hope of pipping them to a top-four spot.

As football writer Leanne Prescott noted, it's far from ideal for the Reds:

Liverpool's struggles to secure their status have coincided with a drop in form from Mohamed Salah, who has not scored in his last three matches in all competitions.

The Egyptian has 43 overall for the campaign, but this is his longest run this season without finding the net since he failed to score against Spartak Moscow, Newcastle and Manchester United in successive matches in September and October.

Liverpool should be capable of at least getting a point at home to Brighton, but a good performance from Salah will go a long way.

He also needs just one more goal to set a scoring record for a single 38-game season with 32, and it would take a little pressure off him heading into the Champions League final against Real Madrid, too.

Jordan Ayew, Swansea City

Swansea looked as though they had escaped relegation after enjoying a revival under manager Carlos Carvalhal, but they now need a lot to go their way on Sunday to stay up.

The Swans will be hoping Man City can do them a favour by racking up a hefty scoreline at Southampton, which is hardly beyond the Sky Blues, but they'll also need to do their part with a strong win against Stoke.

That will be difficult, though, because the Welsh side have only scored 27 goals in the Premier League this season—the worst record in the top flight and one of the key reasons they are where they are—and they've failed to find the net in their last four outings.

If they're to beat Stoke handily, they'll be looking to Jordan Ayew to supply the goals. The 26-year-old has been one of the few standout players for the Swans this season, per TV3's Thierry Nyann:

His older brother, Andre Ayew, has not scored since returning to Swansea in January, so it will fall to him to give Swansea a slim chance of survival on Sunday.

The younger Ayew has 11 goals to his name this season including seven in the Premier League, If Swansea's unlikely bid to avoid relegation is to come off, he'll likely play a key role.
