Tiger Woods' Struggles Continue in Round 4 of 2018 Wells Fargo Championship
The good news: Tiger Woods completed another four-round golf tournament without incident.
The bad news: He wasn't close to contending.
Woods carded a three-over 74 in Sunday's fourth round of the Wells Fargo Championship, putting him in a tie for 56th place at two over. The former world No. 1 concluded his round 12 strokes behind leader Jason Day.
Playing as part of a morning group at Quail Hollow, Woods went through his 18 holes in relative anonymity. He was without a birdie against three bogeys, failing to continue building positive momentum after shooting a 68 on Saturday.
This was Woods' first event since his 32nd-place finish at the Masters in April. Before his shaky Augusta outing, Woods had recorded two straight top-fives. Aside from a missed cut at the Genesis Open in February, his last two tournaments have been his worst from a results perspective.
Woods struggled with his putting throughout the tournament and was one of a number of high-profile golfers who couldn't figure out Quail Hollow's greens.
"I'm close," Woods told reporters. "I'm hitting the ball well enough to contend, to win this golf tournament, but I just haven't made putts."
Woods didn't do much to improve Sunday. His drives were long but all over the place, as he hit just 28.6 percent of fairways. He also only hit 55.6 percent of greens in regulation, and he continued to struggle on the short grass. The PGA's "strokes gained" metric showed he lost 2.5 strokes with his putter in the fourth round.
Woods will hope to rebound at the Players Championship. He'll be paired with Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson in arguably the most noteworthy group of the first two rounds. Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas will make up another trio.
Woods' 2013 win at the Players Championship was the 78th of his career. He has not won since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational.
