Premier League Table: Final Week 37 2018 Standings, Results and Week 38 Fixtures

Arsene Wenger enjoyed his final home game in charge of Arsenal with a 5-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

The result ensured the Gunners will finish sixth, the lowest finish during Wenger's 22 years in charge, but the performance did at least offer the 68-year-old a fitting send-off.

The same day saw Chelsea beat Liverpool 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to close the gap on fourth place to just two points. Former Wenger signing Olivier Giroud headed the winner for the Blues, who are just three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand.

Burnley went to north London in seventh but were always going to find the occasion tough to overcome as Arsenal celebrated Wenger's tenure.

Wenger saw his final home team in front on 14 minutes when the two most expensive signings he's made combined. Alexandre Lacazette teed up strike partner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a tap-in after typically slick passing from the Gunners.

Aubameyang only joined Arsenal in the January transfer window but has quickly made his mark, per Squawka Football:

Lacazette turned from provider to goalscorer when he doubled Arsenal's advantage in first-half stoppage time. The former Lyon star finished smartly to continue a terrific recent scoring run detailed by WhoScored.com:

Sead Kolasinac and the impressive Alex Iwobi got on the scoresheet before Aubameyang completed his brace, as the Gunners gave Wenger the perfect send-off at home.

Arsenal played the kind of artful and dynamic attacking football Wenger made a badge of honour during his 22 years at the helm.

Games against Leicester City then Huddersfield give Wenger the chance to end his reign by fixing a dire away record this season that's seen the Gunners so far fail to take a single point on their travels in 2018.

Chelsea couldn't be as dynamic against a Liverpool side energetic and combative in midfield. The Reds were on the front foot for most of the first half but couldn't contain Giroud when the 31-year-old rose highest to head the winner on 32 minutes.

As OptaJoe pointed out, Giroud made the most of being on from the start:

OptaJean noted how dominant Giroud has been in the air the last three seasons:

Liverpool remain focused on the Champions League final against Real Madrid but should be mindful of their top-four status with both Chelsea and Spurs having played a game less.

Both will be in action on Wednesday, with Chelsea hosting Huddersfield, while Tottenham welcome Newcastle United to Wembley. Results in those games will go a long way toward deciding who finishes fourth.

Huddersfield dampened City's title celebrations slightly by producing a stubborn defensive effort at the home of the champions. The Terriers fielded a flat back five and challenged the Citizens to play through the lines.

While they can usually manage it with style and swagger, City struggled to find the gaps between the numbers. Goal's Sam Lee applauded Huddersfield's defensive depth and discipline:

The hosts were also unnerved by a high Huddersfield forward line prepared to press and harry relentlessly and force City to forego their usual intricate passing for aimless long punts.

In the end, the visitors got the point they had come for, one they can bank toward Premier League survival. BT Sport's Gary Lineker emphasised the achievement:

City will finish what has been a glorious campaign at Southampton on the season's final day. Before then, though, Chelsea have precious points to play for on Wednesday, the same day Spurs must take advantage of being at home against a side already assured of safety.

As for Wenger, he has two matches left before the curtain comes down for the last time on one of the longest and most successful club and manager relationships in the history of English football.
