Kentucky Derby Results 2018: Winner, Final Race Times and Purse Payout
Not even sloppy conditions could stop Justify from steamrolling his way to the title at the 144th Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
Jockey Mike Smith was aggressive in the early portion of the 1.25-mile race with the favorite and put him in position to charge to the lead before the final turn. Justify then turned on the jets and cruised to the finish line before Good Magic or the rest of the field without much challenge down the stretch.
NBC Sports shared a look at the race:
The result was a notable purse payout for the victor. According to Dave DeLuca of Sporting News, "The Kentucky Derby winning purse is $2 million, and the winner takes home an estimated $1.24 million."
Here is a look at the final order and race times (lengths behind) for Justify and the entire field from Saturday's race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, per NBC's broadcast:

The primary storyline entering the competition was the steady rainfall that led to a sloppy and muddy track. Marc Weinberg of WDRB in Louisville noted there was a flash flood warning in an area including Churchill Downs, which marked the second straight year for subpar track conditions after Always Dreaming won last year's race.
Smith navigated Justify through the rain in another testament to his brilliant career.
According to the Kentucky Derby's official website, Smith was enshrined in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2003 and had four prior Triple Crown race wins on his resume, including the 2005 Kentucky Derby with Giacomo.
Smith isn't the only notable person involved with Justify; trainer Bob Baffert entered Saturday's race as a four-time Derby winner. He was also the trainer for American Pharoah, who captured the 2015 Triple Crown.
It was no surprise Justify won considering he was favored at plus-325 before the race, per Odds Shark. Mendelssohn and My Boy Jack were next at plus-650.
Justify prevailed as the sixth straight favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, per the Washington Post, but he overcame a historical obstacle considering he did not race as a two-year-old. According to the Washington Post, Apollo was the last horse to win the Derby without racing as a two-year-old, and it came all the way back in 1882.
The question now is whether Justify can parlay his impressive showing from Saturday into a Triple Crown. Baffert is certainly familiar with the process after helping guide American Pharoah to the accomplishment in 2015, and Justify is yet to lose.
Next up is the 2018 Preakness, which is on May 19 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
