Kentucky Derby 2018 Payout: Finishing Times, Prize-Money Earnings for Field
In the end, Justify proved that he was worth the hype in winning the 2018 Kentucky Derby to cash in as the odds-on favorite throughout race week.
The colt braved a sloppy track and 20-horse field to clinch a comprehensive victory Saturday, fending off contenders Good Magic and Audible, who rounded out the top three. The Bob Baffert-trained colt benefitted from a clean break out of his post position so that he could run with early pace-setter Promises Fulfilled.
Justify's overall time of 2:04.20 wasn't impressive by history's terms, but as horse racing analyst Eric Crawford notes, the colt was forced into a blistering pace in the early going so that he could finish the way that he did:
The long shot fell away after the first half of the race, but Justify showcased good endurance as he extended his lead while Good Magic made his late charge. NBC Sports provided the full race video:
Here's a look at the complete order of the finish along with the prize money for the horses' connections after the high stakes race:

The story of the night was Justify breaking the "Curse of Apollo" by becoming the first horse since 1882 to win the race after not racing as a two-year-old. Darren Rovell of ESPN provided some context for just how long that record has stood:
While Justify's win had a historic connotation, the favorite coming through for bettors just extends the recent trend. The morning line favorite has won each of the last six Derbys, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Now the focus will shift on to whether Justify has what it takes to win the Preakness and the Belmont in pursuit of the Triple Crown. After dealing with the adversity of a muddy track and a fast-paced start, jockey Mike Smith spoke of how special this horse is, which bodes well for his chances:
Baffert didn't shy away from the Triple Crown hype, either:
While it's hard to tell who will step up to challenge the horse in the Preakness in two weeks, one would have to think Audible and Good Magic will be contenders. The two stood out as contenders who ran good races despite the elements.
Mendelssohn was the biggest disappointment of the pack. At times this week, Mendelssohn's odds rivaled Justify's, but the UAE Derby winner finished a disappointing 20th.
With a 136-year curse broken, a favorite winning and a near-favorite finishing in last place, the complete unpredictability and volatility of the Triple Crown chase was on display at Churchill Downs.
