Kentucky Derby 2018 Weather Update: Flash Flood Warning Sent at Churchill Downs
Rain has been steadily falling at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and the 2018 Kentucky Derby may be facing even more inclement weather throughout Saturday.
Marc Weinberg of WDRB in Louisville reported the city is under a flash flood warning and shared an ominous look at the radar:
Whether or not the rainfall is heavy enough to qualify as a flash flood, it's doubtful the showers will slow down too much before the 6:34 p.m. ET post time. According to AccuWeather, there's a 49 percent chance of rain at both 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The Churchill Downs official Twitter account announced Saturday the track conditions were considered "muddy," but the Associated Press reported the conditions have since been downgraded to "sloppy."
Track conditions were less than ideal for the 2017 Derby as well. As a result, Always Dreaming posted the second-slowest winning time since 2010 (two minutes, 3.59 seconds).
A slow track could be the ultimate equalizer Saturday night and level the playing field against race favorites Mendelssohn and Justified.
