La Liga Results 2018: Scores and Updated Table After Saturday's Week 36 Matches

Tom SunderlandMay 5, 2018

Valencia secured a top-four La Liga finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League despite losing 1-0 at Villarreal on Saturday, where captain Mario Gaspar powered home an 86th-minute winner for the hosts. Three points also assured Villarreal of a spot in next term's UEFA Europa League.

Los Che's European qualification was confirmed earlier as Real Betis' unbeaten streak of eight matches was brought to an end at San Mames, where Athletic Bilbao won 2-0 to end their four-match run without a victory.

Elsewhere, a Kike Garcia brace led Eibar's 4-1 demolition at Girona, taking manager Jose Luis Mendilibar's side up to 10th and within one point of their Catalan hosts.

Recap

Valencia lost out to regional rivals Villarreal in their trip to the Estadio de la Ceramica, but their place in next season's Champions League group stage was assured before their 1-0 defeat to the Yellow Submarine.

Manu Trigueros set the Villarreal captain up for a sensational, late opportunity, and Gaspar rose highest to glance in from a well-taken free-kick and claim three points in the Valencia derby.

Fifth-placed Betis lost in their trip to Athletic and now can't make up the nine points that keeps them from Valencia, who celebrated their Champions League comeback with a 2017-18 tribute:

Villarreal now sit two points behind Betis and have a game in hand over Los Verdiblancos, but two of their last matches fall away to Barcelona before ending their season against Real Madrid at home.

Athletic were successful in fending off in-form Betis and handed the guests their first defeat since March 4. It wasn't until the 76th minute that Iker Muniain put Los Leones ahead, and Aritz Aduriz ended his goal drought in injury time, further cementing his place in La Liga history books, per Transfermarkt (via Inside Athletic):

Girona's hopes of qualifying for next season's Europa League all but came to an end on Saturday after Eibar laid siege to their hosts, winning 4-1 after Garcia's first-half brace put them in the driving seat.

Aday Benitez pulled one back for the Catalan outfit 10 minutes after the restart, but Joan Jordan and Takashi Inui added two more goals in the 80th and 89th minutes, respectively, to wrap up a confident win.

Celta Vigo were missing the injured Iago Aspas in attack when they played host to Deportivo, who snatched a draw in their last La Liga Galician derby for some time thanks to a 91st-minute leveller from Arsenal loanee Perez.

Maxi Gomez put Celta ahead after only 13 minutes, but they were punished for their wastefulness and now have to win their two remaining games to have any chance of qualifying for the Europa League.
