Tiger Woods Finds Groove in 3rd Round of 2018 Wells Fargo Championship
Tiger Woods played a forgettable first two rounds at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he came alive on moving day after finishing just inside the cut line Friday.
Coming off a two-over par showing in Round 2 that left him at two over for the week, Woods fired a three-under 68 to move to one under through 54 holes at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.
At the conclusion of his round, Woods was six shots behind co-leaders Peter Malnati and Peter Uihlein.
While Woods struggled mightily with his putter Thursday and Friday, he looked far more confident around the greens Saturday, especially on the front nine.
Woods produced birdies on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 to nearly equal his birdie total from the first two-plus rounds, according to ESPN Stats & Info:
Tiger's momentum was slowed by a bogey on the par-four ninth, but birdies on Nos. 13-15 vaulted him to four under on the day and two under for the championship, as the PGA Tour documented on Twitter:
ESPN Stats & Info put that prosperous run in perspective:
Those conversions gave Woods a nice foundation to build upon entering the Green Mile, and he played Quail Hollow's most daunting three-hole stretch at a respectable one over to close his finest round since the Arnold Palmer Invitational in mid-March.
Still, Woods isn't likely to find himself in contention Sunday.
He can, however, use Saturday's effort as a springboard to enter the week of the Players Championship in a confident frame of mind.
