Billy Horschel, Scott Piercy Team Take Zurich Classic 2018 Win at 22 Under
The duo of Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy stood tall at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Sunday at TPC Louisiana in Avondale.
With a five-under final round, Horschel and Piercy finished at 22 under for the tournament, one shot better than the team of Jason Dufner and Pat Perez. The PGA Tour shared a replay of Piercy's par putt on No. 18 that helped secure the title:
The Zurich Classic is unusual in that it uses the team format. After a third round in which golfers used four-ball best-ball rules, the teams alternated shots Sunday.
Horschel and Piercy got started with a pair of birdies on their first two holes of the final round. Horschel sunk the birdie putt on both occasions. After another birdie on No. 7, they carded two more after making the turn.
On the 11th hole, Horschel left his teammate with an easy birdie putt after chipping out of the sand and dropping the ball two feet from the cup:
Piercy narrowly missed out on a birdie on No. 16. His putt rolled just past the whole, which led to a visible reaction from his teammate, per the Advocate's Scott Rabalais:
But Horschel and Piercy ultimately held on to win the title.
Dufner and Perez climbed up the leaderboard after going three under on the front nine, but they were just one under on the back nine, which left them unable to catch Horschel and Piercy.
Likewise, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen reeled off four straight birdies to start their back nine and move to 20 under. Their momentum slowly fizzled as they finished with five straight pars to wrap up the tournament.
Through 54 holes, Scott Brown and Kevin Kisner paced the field at 20 under. They came unraveled Sunday, combining to go five over for the round and end up in a tie for 15th.
For Horschel, Sunday's win continues what has been a solid month on the PGA Tour. After missing the cut of the 2018 Masters, he tied for fifth at the RBC Heritage and tied for 11th at the Valero Texas Open.
This is also the second time Horschel won the Zurich Classic. He was victorious in 2013, before the event adopted the team format.
Piercy might be able to use the victory to kick-start his 2018 campaign. He hadn't registered a top-10 finish since January, and he failed to make the cut in two of his previous five events.
