Zurich Classic 2018: 2 Pairs Hold Share of Lead After Shooting 12-Under Round 1
There are many power pairs in the 2018 Zurich Classic.
Chez Reavie and Lucas Glover and Xinjun Zhang and Zecheng Dou beat them all. The two pairs shot a 12-under 60 in Thursday's first round, giving them a two-stroke lead over the field.
"We read them right early, and that just gave us good feeling for the rest of the day. Chez birdied the first two; we were dead on with both the reads, so we just kept it going," Glover said, per Golf Digest's Christopher Powers. "We changed maybe a ball or two in a direction one way or the other and that was it. We were pretty right on. Luckily we were hitting our lines also."
The Zurich Classic follows a four-ball format. The partners each shoot a shot and then play from the best ball, which allows for low scoring. No team in the top 20 shot worse than eight under, and there are eight pairs who shot 10 under or better.
"It's just good fun and it's very relaxing. It's obviously a big tournament, but it's kind of just good fun having a good friend alongside you and a really good player as well," said Tommy Fleetwood, who is tied for third at 10 under with partner Chris Paisley. "It's a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than normal, and that obviously helps."
While the scores went low, they did not for everyone.
World No. 2 Justin Thomas and teammate Bud Cauley are currently sitting in a tie for 77th after shooting just two under. Sergio Garcia is in a tie for 52nd after shooting a five-under 67 with partner Rafa Cabrera Bello.
Things are looking a little better for Jordan Spieth and Ryan Palmer, who are sitting six strokes behind at six under.
The field is the first to field all four reigning major champions since the Tour Championship last September.
Masters champion Patrick Reed is in a tie for 21st with Patrick Cantlay after shooting seven under. Brooks Koepka is tied for 52nd with playing partner Marc Turnesa.
