Report: Manchester City to Spend over £100M in Summer Transfer Window

Christopher SimpsonApr 16, 2018

Manchester City will reportedly back manager Pep Guardiola with more than £100 million this summer as they seek to build on their Premier League title win.

According to MailOnline's Jack Gaughan, City believe Guardiola can "rule English football for as long as he wants to be here" and will not be resting on their laurels after Manchester United's failure to beat West Bromwich Albion assured them of the title on Sunday.

The Sky Blues are said to want to bring in at least two new players this summer and could make as many as four signings to add further quality and depth to their already stacked squad.

City have won the title at a canter this season. Having lost just twice, they're 16 points ahead of United with five matches remaining.

As Miguel Delaney of the Independent noted, City could yet break several records before the season is over:

Sky Sports' Adam Bate offered further impressive context to their position:

Given how strong they've been, you could be forgiven for thinking the team have little need to strengthen over the summer. However, no team has defended the Premier League title since United did so in 2009, and City want to turn this victory into lasting success, as well as challenge in the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool took down Guardiola's side 5-1 over two legs in the quarter-finals, despite holding a 17-point advantage over them domestically. The Reds, along with United and City's other rivals, will also be making moves this summer to help them close the gap on the Sky Blues.

Fresh spending from City will make doing so even more difficult, though, particularly given their strong record of recruitment.

While not all the players signed during Guardiola's tenure have been a success—Claudio Bravo had to be replaced in goal, and Nolito was sold to Sevilla after just one season—their captures have, by and large, strengthened the team.

If their recruits this summer can be similarly strong assets, City will have an excellent chance of building long-term success on the platform of this season's title win.
