PSG Win 5th Ligue 1 Title in 6 Years After 7-1 Demolition of Monaco

Gianni VerschuerenApr 15, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain reclaimed the Ligue 1 title in dominant fashion on Sunday, beating last year's champions AS Monaco 7-1.

Les Parisiens did so without their two star additions of last summer, as both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe sat out the contest.

PSG confirmed the result was enough to secure the title via Twitter:

It was their fifth title of the last six years, and the manner in which they demolished their main competitors for the top spot will surely reignite discussions regarding the lack of competition in France.

Angel Di Maria and Giovani Lo Celso both bagged a brace, while Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler also got on the scoresheet. Monaco striker Radamel Falcao contributed to his side's defeat with an own goal.

While former Monaco man Mbappe was on the bench for the match, star forward Neymar wasn't even in the stands, and his absence did not sit well with a lot of fans.

Get French Football News also weren't happy:

The celebrations continued without him, though, as PSG grabbed their second piece of silverware of the season after beating Monaco in the Coupe de la Ligue final in March.

Per sportswriter Jerome Pugmire, the outgoing champions put themselves in their current position with their decisions last summer:

PSG continue their quest for a third major prize on Wednesday, when they face Caen in the Coupe de France semi-final.
