AC Milan Shock Will Haunt Real Madrid
What If The Witch Is Right That He Will Bewitch Ronaldo Out Of Football
How on earth does Real Madrid spend over 200 million pounds and fail to beat a team packed with players, negotiating retirement?
One would mistake slow-moving AC Milan for Real Madrid on Wednesday night. So pathetic that Real failed to produce the spark promised by myriads of their whistle blowers. It was evident the team heavily missed on the weight of crocked star, Cristiano Ronaldo, 24. There is no doubt about that. Indeed, defender Raúl Albiol highlighted at the end of the game to the Spanish press.
So many friends have argued with me that Real Madrid do not world class defenders at the club to stop goals flowing past Iker Casillas. Yesterday’s Bernabeau classic finally exposed the missing link at the back, which certainly is a big undoing to the team’s ambition of winning Champions League this season. They may walk away with La Liga but not the Champions League. Milan could have counted four goals, had it not been for the obvious Alexandre Pato header.
Kaka, 27, the midfield maestro imported from Milan failed to impose his authority on to the match, giving so much space for Clarence Seedorf, Massimo Ambrosini and Andre Pirlo. The Brazil playmaker was not Real’s player of the day but, Lassana Diarra.
Pato, 21, produced the performance that reminded many why Chelsea boss, Carlo Ancelotti was ready to fork out over 40 million pounds to secure his signature from San Siro. The Brazilian appeared isolated at the right wing of the pitch at half time but, when the two team’s came out of the dressing room, he reduced country man Marcelo to a school boy footballer. His pace on the ball and off it was absolutely amazing. Even Portuguese kingpin Pepe and Raúl Albiol could not catch up to his brilliance. Madrid directors will certainly not forget his two goals, perhaps he could be the target for next summer. The fans probably still had the memories of Ronaldinho, but Pato reminded them that there is no drought of players in brazil.
Milan practically lost heavy weight battles from their tours in USA, to Serie A. it is hardly a week when Milan have been linked to their heroic hitman, Marco van Basten, to takeover management at the club.
While one can assert that Barcelona FC and Madrid’s rivals out Spain like Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Liverpool, may not be at their best, Manuel Pelegrini’s side must not expose their weaknesses for all to take advantage of. It is so unfortunate that they have done so, haven’t they? The Spanish outfit, however, do not know how to respond to crisis. Like in the Premier League, while Arsenal, Manchester United and perhaps Liverpool have come out of such crisis by siding with management, Florentino Perez, the club’s untouchable president is going to move a vote of no confidence against Pellegrini. Perez, a shrewd businessman has already sounded a stun warning to the manager about his rotation policy, which many of the expensively imported stars like Ronaldo (80 million pounds) and Karim Benzema (35 million pounds) have questioned.
The Madrid president, obviously, is a businessman who believes in results, and he will definitely not want to be seen failing on his promise. He assured the 80,000 full-capacity Bernabeau crowd at the unveiling ceremony of Ronaldo that he wants Madrid back on the European football map.
With the performance exhibited at the Santiago Bernabeau, there is a lot of homework to do for the management at the club. It has not been a bed of roses for the club after injury to the Ronaldo. Real is missing Ronaldo’s goals, energy and assists.
Perez must listen to Pellegrini or the next tactician, to perhaps lure a top defender like Nemanja Vidic, John Terry or Rio Ferdinand to organise that backline or the drought will continue at the continental level.
The modern game seems to be rotating around a rock solid defence with speedy wingers. But that is not the case in Spain. It is only Barcelona who have the ball retaining ability that and have mastered the art. It is a defensive mechanism to them. They have fashioned it against Europe’s best like Manchester United in Rome last may and Chelsea. It is unfortunate the possession at end of the night switched in favour of the Italian giants.
Real have a good opportunity to change things tonight against Sporting, away. But kudos should go to Raúl Gonzalez, 32, for equating Guerd Muller’s 66 goal record in Europe.
