Champions League Results 2018: Qualified Teams After Tuesday Quarter-Final Games

James DudkoApr 10, 2018

Barcelona are out of the UEFA Champions League after a shocking collapse in the second leg of their quarter-final tie against AS Roma on Tuesday night.

The Blaugrana lost 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, despite carrying a 4-1 first-leg lead into the game, to lose on away goals on a night when Liverpool completed the job against Manchester City.

The Reds won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to reach the last four with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Roma took the lead after just six minutes when Edin Dzeko finished smartly past goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The score put the striker level with one of the club's most prolific performers in Europe's top tournament, per Sky Sports Statto:

Dzeko was again at the heart of things when Roma scored a second goal 13 minutes after the break. The towering forward was bundled to the floor by an overmatched Gerard Pique, earning the home side a penalty that skipper Daniele De Rossi dispatched coolly.

Barca's troubles became a nightmare eight minutes from time when Kostas Manolas headed in the decisive goal. It meant the five-time Champions League winners were out, prompting several questions.

Goal's Ben Hayward wondered why key attacker Ousmane Dembele entered the contest so late:

The question is apt when put alongside the criticism from Andrew Gaffney of Yahoo Sport UK, who believes Barca manager Ernesto Valverde doesn't rotate enough:

There were also questions regarding referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz after he controversially ruled out a goal for City against Liverpool.

The Citizens were already ahead courtesy of Gabriel Jesus' finish after less than two minutes, but they thought they had doubled their lead thanks to Leroy Sane shortly before the break.

Instead, the Spanish official chalked off the goal for offside, even though Sane scored after Liverpool's James Milner had touched the ball.

The Reds made the most of their reprieve when Mohamed Salah brought up another goalscoring landmark in the 56th minute, per Squawka Football:

It was 2-1 to the Reds when Roberto Firmino added a second 13 minutes from time. In the process, the Brazil international joined Salah in Liverpool's record books:

Speaking of records, Liverpool's free-scoring squad established another notable feat after a ruthless display in front of goal:

A penchant for scoring means the Reds are a team to be feared in the last four. Their pace up top can change any tie in an instant.

Meanwhile, Roma's experience, epitomised by players such as Dzeko and De Rossi, can again prove crucial when the stakes get higher.

The other two teams in the semi-final will be determined on Wednesday. Bayern Munich take a 2-1 lead into their quarter-final with Sevilla at the Allianz Arena, while Real Madrid face Juventus at the Santiago Bernabeu after defeating the Bianconeri 3-0 in the first leg.
