La Liga Results 2018: Scores and Updated Table After Wednesday's Week 26 Matches

Gill ClarkFeb 28, 2018

Atletico Madrid cut the gap on leaders Barcelona to four points on Wednesday as they beat Leganes 4-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano.

In-form Antoine Griezmann scored all four goals for Diego Simeone's side, who face a trip to the Camp Nou to take on Barcelona next in La Liga. Ernesto Valverde's team have the chance to restore their seven-point lead ahead of that clash when they face Las Palmas on Thursday.

Elsewhere, struggling Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna remain deep in trouble after slipping to defeats, Eibar beat Villarreal and Valencia were held at Athletic Bilbao.

Wednesday Recap

Griezmann made it two hat-tricks in two games as Atletico blew Leganes away. The France international opened the scoring after 26 minutes, as he held off his defender before slotting past goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar. He then added a second with a sweetly struck free-kick.

A third goal arrived after the break when Griezmann headed home Filipe Luis' cross, before Diego Costa set up his strike partner for the fourth.

Spanish football journalist David Cartlidge explained Griezmann's return to top form:

Opta showed how the 26-year-old achieved a first for Atletico:

Griezmann was then substituted to a deserved standing ovation as Atletico coasted to victory. It was a fantastic display from the Frenchman, who now has 10 goals in his last five games and is in peak form. Atletico will hope he can cause Barcelona problems when the two sides meet on Sunday.

Valencia missed the chance to move back above Real Madrid as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao.

The hosts started the game the brighter of the two sides but fell behind midway through the first half. Ferran Torres found Geoffrey Kondogbia and he fired home the opener.

Opta showed how it was a landmark start for Torres:

Cartlidge praised the youngster for his display:

Athletic had a glorious opportunity to equalise as they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Jeison Murillo. However, Neto managed to parry Aritz Aduriz's shot and preserve his clean sheet.

The hosts were not to be denied, though, and managed to draw level after the break. Oscar de Marcos tried his luck from the edge of the box, and his effort went through a crowd of players and beat Neto.

Athletic had the better of the game after that but could not find another goal against a disappointing Valencia side.

Sevilla returned to winning ways with a narrow victory over Malaga, who are now five points adrift at the bottom of the league. The visitors took just 15 minutes to open the scoring as Nolito chipped the ball for Joaquin Correa to slide past goalkeeper Roberto.

The goal was enough for Sevilla to take all three points and leave the hosts in dire trouble. They have now lost five consecutive games and have managed just three goals in 2018.

Deportivo La Coruna also remain in the bottom three after going down 3-0 at Getafe. Two goals in four minutes just before half-time, from Angel Rodriguez and an own goal by Eneko Boveda, put the hosts in charge.

The defender's evening got even worse late on as his back pass caught on the soaked pitch and allowed Jorge Molina the simple task of firing home the third.

The result means Depor have still not won under coach Clarence Seedorf and have gone five consecutive games without a goal.
