Liverpool vs. Newcastle United
Newcastle looked to be on course to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since September after they went 2-0 up against Bournemouth on Saturday, and a victory would have sent them 11th.
However, a late capitulation ensured they only came away with a point, leaving them just two points clear of the drop.
The Chronicle's Mark Douglas offered a silver lining for the Magpies:
Newcastle's form has otherwise been encouraging of late, though they will be up against it at Anfield on Saturday.
Liverpool are an imperious side at home and showed as much in their last outing as they dispatched West Ham 4-1. Mohamed Salah continued his incredible season, per football writer Jack Lusby:
Football writer Leanne Prescott also praised the Egyptian, along with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane:
With the trio in such good form, it's difficult to see Newcastle coming away from the match with anything.
On the back of the disappointment at Bournemouth, it's important the Toon avoid a defeat as comprehensive and morale-sapping as the one West Ham received, or it may be difficult for them to rediscover their form when more winnable fixtures come round again.
Manchester City vs. Chelsea
Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Man United on Sunday was their third loss in their last four Premier League outings.
As Goal's Nizaar Kinsella noted, the Blues weren't outplayed but nevertheless came away with nothing, which leaves them in a difficult situation:
Things won't be any easier this time around when they face City.
ESPN FC's Liam Twomey believed the Sky Blues' comfortable victory in the Carabao Cup final was an ominous sign for Chelsea:
Getting a result at the Etihad Stadium will be difficult, particularly given Chelsea haven't been at their best of late.
What could count in the Blues' favour is that City play Arsenal again at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday.
Even though manager Pep Guardiola will likely rotate some of his stars for that match, it's not ideal preparation ahead of a clash with a side of Chelsea's quality, and the Blues should be fresher than their counterparts during the game.
They'll need to capitalise on that, or their chances of finishing in the top four will take another damaging blow.
