GANGNEUNG, SOUTH KOREA - FEBRUARY 13: Arianna Fontana of Italy and Minjeong Choi of South Korea race for the finish line during the Short Track Speed Skating Women's 500m final on day four of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games at Gangneung Ice Are

We start with the women's 1,500-meter, where a number of skaters have a legitimate shot at gold. South Korea's Choi Min-jeonga world champion in 2015 at just 16, is among the favorites, joined by her compatriot Shim Suk-hee.

That pair finished first and second, respectively, at the past year's World Cup, while Shim earned a silver medal in 2014 and was third in the 2017 World Championships.

"People say we're under all this pressure because of the media focus on us," Shim told Olympic.org. "But I don't bother with that. I just focus on my training. All I want to do is make sure I don't have any regrets about my performance at the Games.

"When I went to Sochi I was young and didn't have any experience. But when I go to Pyeongchang, I want to win the individual races. I want to get results I can feel pleased about."

Canada's Kim Boutin is a major threat to medal as well after finishing third in the 2017-18 World Cup behind Choi and Shim.

And don't sleep on Canada's Marianne St-Gelais, who finished second at the 2017 World Championships, Canada's Valerie Maltais (fourth in the World Cup) or China's Yang Zhou, the defending Olympic gold medalist.

Italy's Arianna Fontana, the silver medalist in 2014, finished fourth at the 2017 World Championships but just 10th in the World Cup.

In the men's 1,000-meter, meanwhile, Hungary's Sandor Liu Shaolin, China's Wu Dajing, South Korea's Hwang Dae-heon and Yira Seo, the Netherlands Sjinkie Knegt and Canada's Charles Hamelin will be among those gunning for gold.

Hwang holds the world record in the event, while Seo is the defending world champion, though Hamelin—a four-time Olympic medalist already—set an Olympic record with his time of one minute and 23.407 seconds in the event's heats.

It's a strong field and has been generally in short track, as Hamelin noted.

"It's a field completely different than what it was four years ago and eight years ago," he told Callum Ng of the CBC. "You need to adapt your way of racing."

If he's made the proper adaptations, it wouldn't be surprising to see Hamelin finally add a gold in the 1,000-meter to his trophy case.
