Monday was an important day in the event as 2,882 dogs began the day as contenders, but only a small percentage made it to Tuesday's finals.

Among those who have earned a spot in the Best in Show ring are Flynn, a bichon frise; Biggie, a toy pug; and Lucy, a borzoi hound.

Here's a look at the individual breed/judging that took place Monday at Piers 92 and 94 in New York City.

Heart, a Labrador retriever, won the obedience championship for the third consecutive year. Handler Linda Brennan showed off Heart's skills, which included fetching a crescent-moon-shaped balloon and picking out crescent pillows from piles of star-shaped ones, according to the Associated Press (h/t New York Daily News).

Heart also did several other tricks as she walked, pleasing the onlookers.

The dogs are competing for titles among their groups, including herding, hound, working, sporting, non-sporting, toy and terrier.

Golden retrievers, French bulldogs and Labrador retrievers are the most-entered breeds in the event. While 32 golden retrievers were entered, this breed has never won the Westminster Kennel Club event. Dalmatians, labs and dachshunds are also among the breeds that have never earned the top prize in the competition.

Rumor Has It, a German Shepherd, was victorious in the 2017 competition.
