Patriots and Eagles Break Super Bowl Record for Most Combined Yards
The Philadelphia Eagles' 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII rewrote the NFL record book.
Per ESPN Stats & Info, the Eagles and Patriots set an NFL record for most combined yards in a game and had the second-highest point total in Super Bowl history:
The Eagles and Patriots didn't even need three full quarters to break the previous Super Bowl record for total yards set by Washington and the Denver Broncos 30 years ago.
Washington defeated the Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII as the two teams racked up 929 yards of offense.
Not surprisingly, based on the final score of that game, Washington accounted for 602 of those 929 yards. Quarterback Doug Williams (340 passing yards) and running back Timmy Smith (204 rushing yards) also set individual Super Bowl records in that game.
Williams' mark has since been passed multiple times. Coming into Sunday, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady held the record with 466 passing yards in last year's Super Bowl. He broke his own record with 505 yards in Super Bowl LII.
Also from ESPN Stats & Info, Philadelphia and New England nearly equaled their Super Bowl XXXIX yardage total in the first half:
Both the Eagles and Patriots have high-powered offenses that tied for second in the NFL with 28.6 points per game, but Philadelphia's defense allowed the fourth-fewest yards (306.5) and points per game (18.4).
The Patriots weren't as stingy in terms of yardage, allowing 366 yards per game (29th), but they came in right behind the Eagles with 18.5 points allowed per game.
Those numbers got thrown out the window with the Eagles and Patriots not taking their feet off the gas pedal from the opening kickoff of Super Bowl LII.
