Gianni VerschuerenFeb 4, 2018

Atletico Madrid moved a little closer to Barcelona in the La Liga title race on Sunday, winning their Week 22 fixture against Valencia just hours after the Catalans dropped points.

Angel Correa scored the only goal in a tough clash with Valencia, who continued their slide and will face the Blaugrana in the return leg of the Copa del Rey next.

Earlier in the day, Espanyol held rivals Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in a heated derby. Here's a look at Sunday's full results:

Recap

For once, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid were involved in Sunday's marquee matchup, with Atletico playing host to third-placed Valencia.

The physical nature of the match was highlighted in the second half, when Valencia stopper Neto went so hard into an aerial duel with Diego Godin, he took out the latter's tooth, per football writer Sid Lowe:

The punch did not result in a penalty.

Correa finally opened the scoring shortly after, scoring a stunning goal from outside the box. ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan was impressed:

The score would hold, and as a result, Atletico reduced the gap to Barcelona to single digits.

Barcelona knew they were likely in for a rough afternoon at the RCDE Stadium, where local rivals Espanyol traditionally try to be as physical with the Blaugrana as possible. Sunday's clash was no different, and for a long time, it seemed Gerard Moreno's goal after 66 minutes would be enough for the upset.

Gerard Pique equalised inside the final 10 minutes, and Samuel Marsden of ESPN FC was not surprised:

Pique made headlines last month for taking shots at Espanyol, calling them ''Espanyol de Cornella'' after their Coppa del Rey tie. The club plays in Cornella, a suburb of Barcelona, and Pique suggested they were not a real club from the city.

Athletic Bilbao―with controversial January signing Inigo Martinez, who joined from Basque rivals Real Sociedad, in the squad―lost 2-0 at Girona, courtesy of a brace from Cristhian Stuani.
