Delighted Jurgen Klopp Asks 'What the F--k Was That?' After Liverpool 4-3 City

Christopher SimpsonJan 14, 2018

A delighted Jurgen Klopp swore during an interview on live TV after his Liverpool side beat Manchester City 4-3 at Anfield on Sunday.

The German was speaking to NBC (h/t Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo) and said: "As a manager you can say 'OK, we could have done this better,' but then you can look at it as a football fan and say 'what the f--k was that?' It was unbelievable, though!"

Klopp's language prompted an apology from presenter Arlo White, to which the Liverpool coach responded: "I thought in America it was OK!"

The manager had every reason to be over the moon with the result as the Reds inflicted City's first Premier League defeat of the season.

The two sides went in level at half-time after Leroy Sane had cancelled out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's opener, but three goals in nine minutes from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah handed Liverpool a 4-1 lead.

City mounted a late comeback with goals from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, but the Reds were able to hold on for a memorable victory.

Miguel Delaney of The Independent noted the way Liverpool's pressing and energy high up the field prevented City from playing their natural game, while the Mail on Sunday's Oliver Holt marvelled at the game:

Klopp believes the result could be a significant one in the context of what City could achieve this season. Per Sky Sports' Michael Hincks, he said:

"I think that's a game which proves why many people love this game. That is football. That's how football can look if two teams combine quality and skills with attitude. Then it's possible.

"We were not gambling, but with our counter-attacks we thought, 'We can score the fifth one.' Even if you are with all your own players in the box, they can create chances.

"We were never safe. But I am completely happy because I think it's a fair result. Maybe when you look back at the end of the season, or in 10 years, you will say it's historical because it could be the only defeat for Man City."

Per Goal's Melissa Reddy, Klopp was also pleased with the performance following the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona:

For the Reds to beat the best team in the Premier League without a player of his calibre is an encouraging sign for the remainder of their season, as was the fact that Firmino, Mane and Salah all got on the scoresheet to offer a timely reminder of the firepower still at Klopp's disposal.

The win propelled Liverpool to third place, level with Chelsea and Manchester United on 47 points, albeit the latter have a game in hand against Stoke City.

Barring a remarkable collapse the Sky Blues should still win the title, but the Reds have given their chances of finishing in the top four a healthy boost.
