College Football National Championship 2018: Alabama vs Georgia Vegas Odds Guide
The SEC Conference Championship Game 2.0 is set. Or, as the rest of you might call it, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Georgia took care of business in a double-overtime thriller against Oklahoma, and Alabama throttled Clemson to set up an all-SEC matchup 8 p.m. ET Monday. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are the second-ever teams from the same conference to meet in a title game, joining...the SEC's Alabama and LSU from 2012.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart told Alex Scarborough of ESPN.com:
"I'm certainly honored and privileged to be competing against a great university that's kind of been the landmark of college football over the last 10 to 12 seasons. And I know my experiences there working with the late Mal Moore, Bill Battle, Coach [Nick] Saban himself have helped me tremendously in my career. They've done a tremendous job, and I think it's kind of lost in the shuffle of how well they have been able to compete at a high level for a long time and almost take it for granted at times."
Smart served as Saban's defensive coordinator during that game and for each of his four titles with the Crimson Tide. He left following the 2015 season, leading Georgia to the precipice of a national championship in his second year.
If he's able to pull it off, that will put him one year ahead of Saban, who won his first title at Alabama in his third season. The 66-year-old coach is one win away from tying Bear Bryant for the most national championships in Division I/FBS history.
"I'm always looking for the next challenge," Saban said. "I don't know if it's the way I was raised or whatever, that you're kind of only as good as your last play, as your last game. ... In a competitive business like we're in where there's always a next challenge, there's always a next game, there's always a better team to play."
The next game for Saban will give him the challenge of stopping Georgia's three-headed running back monster. Sony Michel and Nick Chubb combined for 326 yards and five touchdowns in Georgia's win over Oklahoma. The third of this group, D'Andre Swift, was held to six yards on four carries but will be a threat for a huge play every time he touches the ball against Alabama.
The Georgia defense will have to contend with a Tide offense that has not put up huge numbers but makes up with playmakers in every direction. Jalen Hurts is the ecosystem around which the Tide thrive, throwing 17 touchdowns (against one interception) and adding eight more on the ground as part of his brilliant sophomore season.
Damien Harris provides the big-play pop on the ground, while Calvin Ridley keeps things moving in the passing game as the only Tide player with 20 or more receptions.
