FedEx Cup Standings 2017: Points, Playoff Standings After BMW Championship

Steve SilvermanSep 17, 2017

The 2017 FedEx Cup has reached its final stage, as the esteemed prize will be awarded next week when the season's top 30 golfers compete for the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

Marc Leishman cemented his status as one of the best players in the world as the Australian came up with a victory in the BMW Championship Sunday at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.

That win allowed Leishman to move up three spots from seventh to fourth in FedEx Cup points and make him one of the favorites to come through in the Tour Championship.

Leishman led the BMW from wire to wire, firing a 23-under 261 to win by five strokes. He shot a 67 in the final round.

"I was determined to get it done, and I got it done," Leishman said to NBC's Steve Sands after he finished the tournament with a flourish thanks to a birdie on the final hole.

Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose finished in a tie for second at 18-under par, while Jason Day was fourth at 16-under.

Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson are the only players to finish ahead of Leishman in the FedEx Cup ranking going into the championship-deciding tournament.

While Leishman would have been in a strong position whether he won the BMW or not, the tension involved in the race for the final spots was compelling.

Patrick Cantlay needed a birdie on the 18th hole to get inside the top 30, and he was able to come through. That allowed him to shoot a 70 in the final round and finish 12-under par for the tournament. Cantlay has 1,347 FedEx points, and that allowed him to rank 29th and earn his spot at East Lake.

Jason Dufner was the last one in, finishing in 30th place with 1,322 points. He edged out South African veteran player Louis Oosthuizen, who had 1,321 FedEx points.

Oosthuizen would have been the No. 30 player if Cantlay had not made his birdie on the final hole.

Oosthuizen has plenty of company among top players who did not make it past the BMW Championship. Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson were edged out from earning an invitation to the final tournament, and so were Bill Haas, Billy Horschel, Keegan Bradley and Zach Johnson.

Here's a look at the rankings going into the Tour Championship, according to PGATour.com. In addition to Spieth, Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Leishman, the rest of the top 10 includes Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, Brooks Koepka and Paul Casey.

All 30 players will have a chance to win the FedEx Cup, as point totals will be adjusted before the start of the tournament.

It would be quite difficult for Dufner to win, even if he was to come away with a win in the Tour Championship. He would need Spieth and many of the other top-ranking players to have poor tournaments in order to come away with the FedEx Cup.
