No. 1 Alabama scored a Pyrrhic victory over No. 3 Florida State in Atlanta on Saturday, 24-7. The Crimson Tide's defense forced three turnovers and held the Seminoles to 250 yards but lost outside linebackers Terrell Lewis (elbow) and Christian Miller (torn biceps) to season-ending injuries.
Nick Saban's squad was already without two other linebackers—Rashaan Evans (groin injury) and Anfernee Jennings (sprained ankle)—heading into its opening game. The Tide could turn to a pair of veterans (Jamey Mosley, Keith Holcombe) and a couple of younger linebackers (sophomore Mack Wilson, true freshman Dylan Moses) to pick up more playing time.
'Bama quarterback Jalen Hurts was sacked twice, but he generally escaped unscathed. The sophomore completed 10-of-18 pass attempts for 96 yards and one touchdown while taking care of the football.
Over in Arlington, Texas, No. 11/9 Michigan did something that no team had done since 1989: beat Florida, ranked 17th by the AP and 16th by the coaches, in a season opener.
Momentum swung on defense between the Gators and Wolverines. Florida had Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight rattled with interceptions returned for touchdowns on back-to-back possessions early in the second quarter.
Jim Harbaugh's team responded by holding the Gators scoreless in the second half. Michigan kicker Quinn Nordin (4-of-6 on field goals) became the first person in school history to hit two field goals from 50 yards or further in the same game.

On Sunday, the Battle for the Black Diamond Trophy took center stage, with No. 21/22 Virginia Tech taking down No. 22/20 West Virginia at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, 31-24.
Hokies quarterback Josh Jackson was a menace with his arm and his legs. The redshirt freshman accounted for 336 total yards (235 passing, 101 rushing) with a touchdown through the air and another on the ground. Nearly half of Jackson's rushing yards came on a 46-yard fourth-quarter scamper up the middle, paving the way for Travon McMillian's three-yard touchdown, which put Virginia Tech up for good at 31-24 with 6:30 left in the game.
The Mountaineers got an impressive debut from quarterback Will Grier. The junior transfer from Florida piled up 371 yards and three touchdowns on 31-of-53 passing. Grier had a shot to tie the score late, but the Hokies defense got just enough pressure on him to disrupt a throw that slipped through wide receiver David Sill's hands.
The game of the weekend, though, didn't feature a Top 25 team. UCLA erased a 34-point deficit en route to a 45-44 win over Texas A&M on Sunday—the biggest FBS comeback since 2006. Junior quarterback Josh Rosen capped off his first game in 11 months with four fourth-quarter touchdowns and five straight scoring drives overall to give the Bruins payback against an Aggies squad that beat them in overtime in College State last September.
