Jeff Horn completed one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history on Sunday in Brisbane, Australia, as the Australian secured a controversial unanimous-decision win against the legendary Manny Pacquiao.

In front of a home crowd at the Suncorp Stadium, Horn battled to scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113 to win the WBO welterweight championship. It was a defeat that will raise questions about the future of Pacquiao, who was the big favourite for the fight despite his advancing years.

Although this bout, Pacquiao's first in Australia, was always expected to be difficult for the favourite, few anticipated Horn would make things quite so tough in Brisbane.

The home fighter set a furious tempo early on, as he sought to rough up 38-year-old Pacquiao and exert himself on the bout. But as the match wore on, the Filipino showed more and more of his quality. While he made the final bell, it was anticipated the Australian had not done enough to win this one.

When it was confirmed the decision was a unanimous one, there was no surprise. When it was announced Horn had it, there was major shock.

As we can see here, courtesy of Sports Illustrated, even the new champion looked a little surprised when the winner was confirmed:

Fox Sports' Jason McIntyre was not happy with the result, suggesting Pacquiao had done enough to take this one:

Indeed, looking at both men afterwards, Pacquiao looked like the winner. After receiving a barrage of punches in Round 9, with the referee appearing on the brink of stopping the contest, 29-year-old Horn was cut badly above his right eye.

By contrast, Pacquiao was composed and looked as though he had enough in him to go another 12 rounds.

Still, away from home and against an aggressive opponent, there are some who will suggest Pacquiao should have been more clinical in finishing this fight. After all, the Filipino continued his knockout drought, with his last win inside the distance coming in 2009 against Miguel Cotto.

As noted by sports broadcaster Skip Bayless, Pacquiao probably should have wrapped this one up in the ninth round when his opponent was vulnerable:

The nature of the win for Horn means there will naturally be calls for a rematch between the pair, an option Pacquiao seemed content with in the immediate aftermath of the fight. However, in a contest he bossed in the main, it's tough to see too much merit in the Filipino facing Horn again.

After all, few doubt he was the stronger man here, and his stellar reputation means that Pacquiao will be able to secure almost any bout he pleases at this stage of his career.

Ultimately, it'll be dependent on whether or not Pacman has a desire to put right one of the most undeserved defeats he's suffered.
