Canelo Alvarez Opens Up On Loss to Terence Crawford, Says 'My Mind Wasn't Right'

Canelo Álvarez sat down with Ariel Helwani on Wednesday and opened up about his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford last September.

"I Know what I did wrong," Álvarez said. "...I did everything right in training camp, but my mind wasn't there."

Crawford defeated Álvarez on all three judges' scorecards: 116-112, 115-113, 115-113.

Crawford, of course, is one of the best boxers in the history of the sport. The now-retired fighter went a perfect 42-0 with 31 knockouts. He also won 18 major world championships in five weight classes.

So there's no shame in losing to Crawford, considering that he's never been defeated and knocked out most of his opponents.

Álvarez is a great boxer in his own right with 63 wins, three losses and two draws. He won world championships in four weight classes, including unified titles in three of them.

Sept. 13, 2025 was not his day, however. According to CompuBox, Crawford landed 115 of his 534 punches compared 99 of 338 for Álvarez (h/t Keith Idec of Ring Magazine).

Álvarez will return soon enough, as he'll face Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Oct. 31.
