The Opening 2017: Results, Rankings, Highlights and Reaction from Friday

Adam WellsJun 30, 2017

Friday was another practice day for quarterbacks and wide receivers at the 2017 Opening, allowing them to get familiar with each other's tendencies before the annual showcase event kicks into high gear starting tomorrow.

While fans continue to wait for the main attractions to begin, including the seven-on-seven tournament and linemen challenge, practice sessions offer a glimpse of the raw talent that every college coach in America is obsessed with luring to their respective campus as part of the 2018 recruiting class.

With 166 of the nation's top recruits in one place for an entire weekend, there will likely be a lot of movement in recruiting rankings and scholarship offers before the end of this year's Opening on Monday night.

A heavy dose of attention will go to the quarterbacks because it's the most important position on the field, but the wide receiver group is not lacking for talent or representation in Oregon this weekend.

There are five 5-star receivers and 16 wideouts are ranked among the top 100 players in the 2018 class right now.

Mater Dei High School's Amon-Ra St. Brown is the best of the bunch. The California native is listed at 6'0" and 190 pounds and earned high marks from Scout.com's Greg Biggins in this analysis of his skill set:

"He's quick off the line, explodes out of his breaks and is a very polished route runner. He's a natural pass catcher with great body control and is very good after the catch. He's a strong, physical receiver as well and shows tremendous worth ethic off the field. He's a dangerous punt and kick return man and has all the talent to be an immediate impact player in college."

Barton Simmons of 247Sports captured a video of St. Brown making a back-shoulder catch look like a breeze:

Irish Illustrated's Pete Sampson added to the glowing scouting reports already attached to St. Brown:

Lower on the recruiting totem pole, though no less exciting, is Texas commit Rondale Moore. He's certainly among the fastest players in the 2018 class, with a 40 time of 4.33 seconds, and showed off that speed early on.

E.J. Holland of 247Sports offered a brief video glimpse of Moore showing off the wheels that made him so appealing to the Longhorns:

Moore is one of the first big success stories for new Texas head coach Tom Herman, who had a decent 2017 class that finished 28th overall in the Scout.com rankings.

During Herman's two seasons at the University of Houston, finished 10th and 26th in scoring offense. Texas hasn't had a top-25 scoring offense since 2012, so Moore's blazing speed will go a long way toward bringing excitement back to the program.

Moving down the list of recruiting rankings, Louisiana's Ja'Marr Chase, who is a 4-star recruit and No. 193 wide receiver in next year's class, made an announcement about his commitment on Friday

Per SEC Country's Sam Spiegelman, Chase will decide between LSU and TCU on July 3 when the finals of the Opening air on the NFL Network. He was originally scheduled to announce his commitment on Sunday.

Spiegelman also shared some video of Chase on the field doing what made him so enticing to LSU and TCU:

Miami commit Mark Pope, the No. 36 receiver in 2018, had one of Friday's best highlights when he left his feet to make a spectacular catch in coverage against one of the coaches, via 247Sports' Andrew Ivins:

Pope isn't a physically imposing wideout at 6'0" and 160 pounds, which he will have to work on at Miami with better coaches and trainers, but his ability to create separation with his easy routes and toughness in coverage make him a potential star for Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt

Some of the nation's top tight end recruits also got in on the action Friday. 4-star prospect Luke Ford is built like a college star already at 6'6" and 250 pounds. Adding to his appeal is the ability to make difficult plays look easy, such as this catch, via 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong:

Not surprisingly, Ford is one of the most sought-after tight ends for teams next year. He's got 12 serious schools of interest at this point, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Michigan and Oregon.

With Ford already big enough to be a force in the red zone, every offensive coordinator in America would have no problem working him into the fold right away.

Now that the two days of practice are in the rearview mirror for all 166 players, full attention can be turned to the competition on the field.

There are still seven months to go before National Signing Day, but this is one of the final showcases for players to make their case for a scholarship offer from the school of their choice and for coaches to make a face-to-face pitch about why they will help them reach their full potential.
