College World Series 2017: Latest Results and Updated Picks for Sunday

Tim DanielsJun 18, 2017

The 2017 College World Series rolls on Sunday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. Florida and TCU, the only two returning teams from last year's CWS field, face off in the nightcap after Louisville and Texas A&M kick off the Day 2 action.

Saturday's games set the tone for what's fixing up to be a highly competitive week. The top-seeded Oregon State and fourth-seeded LSU each scored one-run victories to remain in the winners' bracket, while Cal State Fullerton and Florida State dropped to the elimination bracket.

Let's take a look back at the final scores from the opening day and then check out all of the important viewing information for Sunday's play. That's followed by predictions for the rest of Round 1.

Sunday Predictions

Louisville vs. Texas A&M

Brendan McKay is going through a memorable stretch. On Monday, the Tampa Bay Rays made the Louisville superstar the fourth overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft. On Sunday, the dual-threat athlete will attempt to pitch and slug the Cardinals into the second round of the College World Series.

McKay has been the team's most reliable player, both on the mound and at the plate, this season. He's 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA across 16 starts with 140 strikeouts in 104 innings and a .188 batting average against. As a hitter, he's posted a team-leading .464 on-base percentage with 17 home runs.

He talked about his two-way prowess with MLB Network:

The Dick Howser Trophy winner and his favored Cardinals go up against an upstart Texas A&M group that didn't have a player drafted inside the top 50.

Yet the unheralded club hasn't lacked confidence during its NCAA tournament run. Ben Baby of the Dallas Morning News passed along comments from senior outfielder Nick Choruby, who downplayed any thought the Aggies were content with their run.

"We're going to be going to win a national championship," Choruby said. "We're not just going to be happy to be going."

A&M's hopes of pulling off the upset will depend heavily on the right arm of Corbin Martin. He's accumulated a 3.35 ERA across 23 appearances, including 12 starts, with 94 strikeouts in 86 innings. He'll need to outshine McKay to give his team a puncher's chance.

Pick: 4-3 Louisville

Florida vs. TCU

Florida may be the most well-rounded team at the College World Series. The Gators feature the on-base skills of Nelson Maldonado, the power of JJ Schwarz, the speed of Deacon Liput, the shutdown ability of Alex Faedo and the dominant closing of Michael Byrne.

Typically, even teams that advance to this stage of the NCAA tournament have a weakness in one of those areas. Florida checks all the boxes. The question is whether everything will come together to help the program win its first CWS title.

Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted Gators head coach Kevin O'Sullivan tries not to put the entire emphasis on a national championship, though:

"I know everybody wants your team to win the last game of the year, but when you're one of the last eight teams standing, I can't look at this as a failure, and I don't want our players to feel that way either. There's no question we would love to win the first national championship at Florida. But I never look back on the season and say, 'That was a failure.' Because it's so hard to get to this point."

Faedo (7-2, 2.55 ERA, 11.1 K/9) will need to outduel TCU ace Jared Janczak (9-0, 1.97 ERA, 9.9 K/9) to keep Florida in the winners' bracket.

The Horned Frogs also come into the College World Series riding a wave of momentum after sweeping through the Fort Worth Super Regional. They won all five of their games by a combined score of 40-13, including a 15-run outburst against Dallas Baptist.

Between Florida's impressive roster and TCU's hot streak, each team has the potential to make a championship run. And it wouldn't come as a surprise to see them meet again before the CWS comes to an end, regardless of which side picks up the win Sunday.

Pick: 5-4 Florida
