NCAA Super Regionals 2017: Schedule and Game Predictions for Sunday's Action

Joseph ZuckerJun 11, 2017

The super regionals of the 2017 NCAA baseball tournament continue Sunday, with five games stretched throughout the day and into the evening.

The LSU Tigers and Florida Gators are the headliners Sunday. LSU will meet the Mississippi State Bulldogs, while the Gators will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The Sam Houston State Bearkats will be sentimental favorites for many fans. The Bearkats haven't reached the College World Series at the Division I level, and the drought is likely to extend another year following their defeat Saturday to the Florida State Seminoles.

Sunday Preview

Sam Houston State is playing for its tournament life after allowing four runs in the final three innings to fall 7-6 to Florida State on Saturday. Jackson Lueck singled home Taylor Walls to give the Seminoles the win.

The Bearkats will be happy to see they won't have to face FSU ace Tyler Holton on the mound. Holton is by far the Seminoles' best starting pitcher. Among the team's regular starters, only he and Will Zirzow have an ERA under 4.00.

Zirzow pitched a complete game shutout in the Seminoles' June 5 victory over Auburn. It was only his fourth start of the year, so he's still somewhat unfamiliar with the role.

Opting for Drew Parrish (4.67 ERA) or Cole Sands (5.24 ERA) would likely give manager Mike Martin some concern considering the Bearkats are 26th in Division I in team batting average (.305) and 90th in slugging percentage (.422).

Offense is also a big reason LSU finds itself in the super regionals. Greg Deichmann has hit 19 home runs and slugged .614, while Cole Freeman leads the Tigers with a .333 average and .435 on-base percentage.

Mississippi State will also have to overcome the mental hurdle of getting swept by LSU in the regular season and then losing Saturday night.

NOLA.com's Andrew Lopez showed how last year's super regional exit at the hands of Coastal Carolina is fresh on the minds of LSU:

Still, Mississippi State's luck is bound to turn around sooner or later.

The Gators and TCU Horned Frogs are each a game away from the College World Series following victories Saturday. Florida and TCU relied on late-inning heroics: The Gators scored in the bottom of the 11th to win, and the Horned Frogs scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to win 3-2.

The bad news for Florida is that it needed to use three of its best pitchers—Alex Faedo, Brady Singer and Michael Byrne—as a result of a lengthy weather delay and the extra innings. Faedo and Singer each pitched four innings, and Byrne pitched the final three.

As a result, none of the three will likely be available Sunday, giving the Demon Deacons an edge. Should Florida falter, Faedo and/or Singer may be able to go in the decisive third game, which gives the Gators a bit of safeguard should push come to shove.

TCU relied on its best pitcher, Jared Janczak, to go ahead 1-0 in its series with Missouri State, but the Bears kept their ace, Doug Still, on the bench after he pitched on two days' rest in their June 5 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Missouri State coach Keith Guitton won't have the luxury of giving Still another day of rest considering how much is on the line Sunday. Still is 8-2 in 16 starts with a 2.66 ERA. The Bears have to like their chances of staying alive and pushing their series to a Game 3.
