FedEx St. Jude Classic 2017: 4-Way Tie Atop Leaderboard After Round 1 Action

Adam WellsJun 8, 2017

Matt Every, Stewart Cink, Sebastian Munoz and Scott Brown are in a four-way tie for the lead after the opening round at the 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic on Thursday with matching rounds of six-under 64.

The top of the leaderboard is bunched together with nine players within three shots of that top quartet.

Here's the full leaderboard after the first round from Memphis, Tennessee:

After starting on the front nine with a solid 33, Every ended with a flourish that included two birdies and an eagle on No. 16 that put him in a good spot leading into the second round.

Per Golfweek's Jeff Babineau, Every's performance in 2017 leading up to this week left no indication he was in position to lead a tournament at any point:

The 33-year-old Florida native has two PGA Tour wins on his resume, both at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2014 and 2015.

After the round, Every was not getting too far ahead of himself, per Mike Ceide of WREG-TV in Memphis:

Brown has fared better than Every this season, though he's also a surprise name atop the leaderboard. He's made 12 cuts in 20 tournaments and has one top-10 finish, with six of those missed cuts coming in his past 10 events. His score of 64 represents his best round on the PGA Tour since the 2013 Puerto Rico Open.

Cink missed a golden opportunity to post a lower number. The 2009 U.S. Open champion had nine birdies on the day, including five on the back nine. His three bogeys prevented him from reaching the low 60s, though that's a nitpick in an otherwise excellent day.

He was also playing another competitive round of golf three days after playing 36 holes in Columbus, Ohio, to qualify for this year's U.S. Open.

Cink hasn't won a tournament since his U.S. Open triumph eight years ago. He did finish 10th in the Dean & Deluca Invitational two weeks ago, and things appear to be on the upswing for the 44-year-old.

Munoz was among the last players on the course. He was finally able to chase down Brown, Cink and Every with back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and 16. The Colombian is perhaps the most unlikely leader among the quartet with four cuts made in nine tournaments and zero top-10 finishes.

Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen are among the players in the mix right behind the leaders. Based on recent results for the top group, there figures to be plenty of turnover during the second round before the weekend arrives.
