Germany vs. San Marino: World Cup 2018 Qualifying Live Stream, Preview

Rory MarsdenJun 9, 2017

Germany will be looking to significantly boost their already healthy-looking goal-difference in Group C of UEFA qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup when they host San Marino at the Stadion Nurnberg on Saturday.

In the reverse fixture back in November, the World Cup holders thrashed San Marino 8-0, and it would be no surprise were Joachim Low's side to match or better that result on home turf.

San Marino have scored just once in five games of the current qualifying campaign and have lost their last 16 games on the bounce.

Following Germany's 8-0 hammering of San Marino in Serravalle, forward Thomas Muller gave a scathing assessment of the need for such fixtures between mismatched sides.

"I do not understand the meaning of games such as these, more so with such a busy schedule," said the Bayern Munich star, per MailOnline's John Downes.

He added such encounters have "nothing to do with professional football" and suggested they "lead to unnecessary risks."

Understandably, San Marino were unimpressed with Muller's assessment of the fixture, and their Olympic Committee spokesman, Alan Gasperoni, hit back with 10 reasons why the game should be played and said Germany "does not own the game," per BBC Sport.

Given the aftermath of their last meeting, there may be some added needle to proceedings on Saturday.

However, anything other than another crushing victory for Germany would be a huge surprise.

Low's side are world champions and are the third-ranked side in the world, per FIFA.

San Marino have shipped 26 goals without reply in their last five matches and are ranked No. 204 in the world.

Germany will not be at full strength, nor were they in their Tuesday friendly against Denmark, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Saturday's clash with San Marino is Germany's final match ahead of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, and Low has named the same squad to take to Russia, via Squawka:

Despite the absence of some of Germany's more experienced stars, Die Mannschaft still have more than enough talent to win the Confederations Cup.

And they certainly have the personnel to hand another thrashing to San Marino.

Germany sit atop of their qualifying group at the moment by five points to Northern Ireland having won their first five matches.

A sixth victory and a boosted goal difference is the only realistic outcome from Saturday's clash with San Marino, and anything different would be a major surprise.
