NCAA Softball World Series 2017: No. 1 Florida Notches Win in Sunday's Action

Alec NathanJun 4, 2017

Spots in the Women's College World Series final were up for grabs Sunday, with the No. 1 Florida Gators and No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners in need of one win apiece to punch their tickets to the title tilt.

The Gators had to contend with the sixth-seeded Washington Huskies in the day's early game, while the Sooners squared off against the third-seeded Oregon Ducks as they attempted to move one step closer to defending their national championship.

However, losses from either the Gators or Sooners—who both entered the day undefeated in the double-elimination formatwould force a decisive evening showdown.

Below, you'll find a rundown of the day's scores, as well as a recap of the semifinal action.

Schedule and Results

No. 1 Florida def. No. 6 Washington, 5-2

No. 10 Oklahoma def. No. 3 Oregon, 4-2

Florida 5, Washington 2

The Gators are headed to the Women's College World Series championship series after they put the clamps on the Huskies in a dominant effort Sunday afternoon at ASA Hall Of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Not only was the Gators' offense humming thanks to three RBI from first baseman Kayli Kvistad—including a solo shot in the firstbut Delanie Gourley dazzled on the mound once again.

In a complete game, Gourley recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to drop her ERA to a stunning 0.67. In fact, she was headed for her 13th shutout of the season until Julia DePonte slammed a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Huskies weren't quite as sharp on the mound, as starter Taran Alvelo was tagged to the tune of four earned runs and five hits in 1.1 innings before she was chased from the game.

Looking ahead, the Gators will attempt to stay alive as they eye another championship after their quest for a three-peat was denied in 2016.

Oklahoma 4, Oregon 2

Through four innings, the Sooners looked like they were headed for a decisive game against the Ducks Sunday night.

Not only was their offense fairly anemic, but Oregon jumped on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, courtesy of Danica Mercado, to bolt in front.

But by the time the bottom of the fifth rolled around, the Sooners were ready to roll.

In what proved to be the game's decisive frame, Oklahoma posted four runs, including a two-RBI single from first baseman Shay Knighten that propelled the Sooners in front, 3-2.

Nicole Pendley tacked on an RBI double for good measure, and that two-run cushion was all the Sooners needed.

Not to be overlooked was Oklahoma's pitching tandem of Paige Parker and Paige Lowary.

In five strong innings, Parker struck out four and allowed five hits before she gave way to Lowary—who faced the minimum six batters to send the Sooners back to the finals.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Parker became just the second player to win eight straight decisions at the Women's College World Series thanks to Sunday's effort.
